Smart MyTV Service gets Suspended

Listen to article

Last April 1, Smart’s digital mobile TV was suspended indefinitely as its permit to broadcast has expired. It has been close to 3 years since Smart MyTV was launched back in July 2007.

Smart has not yet officially announced the service cancellation but mobile subscribers are already receiving text messages early this week.

Apparently, Smart MyTV has been running on a demo permit (likely from the NTC) which expired last March 31, 2010. It’s not yet sure if Smart has applied for extension of this permit but for the last 3 years, subscribers have been getting the service for free.

To yuga and all the people who commented here :

DVB-H will not be available in the Philippines anymore because it will be replaced with 1seg.

NTC adopted the Japanese ISDB-T standard for DTV transmissions in the Philippines.

1seg uses unused segments of an ISDB-T UHF transmitter.
A Digital UHF transmitter is divided to 13 segments.
12 segments for an HD channel or for 4 SD channels leaving 1 segment.
The best of 1seg is channels are free, no need for a separate transmitter (unlike DVB-H), stronger coverage area.

Sad thing is, there are no 1seg phones available yet in the Philippines unless if you buy 1seg phones or the PSP 1seg tuner from Japan.

There are 2 1seg channels for now.
GEM HD
NBN
and ABS-CBN will launch hopefully by this month.

If you are a bit confused then try go to
http://www.dibeg.org for you to be familiar with the ISDB-T system

Ah. I thought, (dahil free trial ito before), na-enforce na nila na may charge at need mo muna magbayad bago makapanood.

arthur,

If you’re using an N96 unit just like mine, you can connect the phone’s TV out into Television’s AV In. That is what I am doing until the service cut off. Unfortunately, the NBA Playoffs is fast approaching. Damn SMART, do something about it!!!

I think Philippines is not yet ready for this kind of technology, Even if we are it should appeal for the mass market.

maybe having the license to have a satellite TV (Cignal) made Smart suspended this service.. until such time the service will be profitable.

it is a natural death it seems. who would really watch tv in such a cramped device. try doing it and you’ll soon suffer arm or back ache.
it is really better to watch tv with at least 14inches of screen on a tabletop rather than in your hands.
