Every once in a while, I get an email from some webmasters or site owners asking for a reciprocal link exchange with my blog. I usually brush them off as some nuissance emails and automatically delete them.
Lately though, I have been thinking a little more or trying to reconsider the offers. However, as Marc would have put it, you need to look at some factors when doing or accepting some link exchanges. One of them would obviously be the PageRank (PR) of the site that wants to exchange links with you. Another would be the type of site and similarity of content to your blog.
It’s a different thing altogether when someone asks that his site be linked from my blog for a regular flat fee. I have been offered that before but I shrugged it off.
Has any of you had the same experience. Do you have your own blog link exchange policies as well? What are your thoughts about exchanging links?

I use linkworth. Nobody bought a link until I got to PR6. I don’t do link exchange either. I only on put a link if I like the site.
john says:
i use to do it when i had a rank of 2. i know it’s no big deal to some of you but then i stopped when google brought me down to a big fat zero. does anyone have suggestions on how i can get my ranking back? thanks.
Andre says:
to exchange links, best would be a similar site or topic, and PR matters a little bit. what you probably want to worry about most is where on their site will the link go and how many people will see it, i’d prefer good placement over PR, though if the PR is high enough anywhere on the page is fine. also beware some people link using javascript as a way to avoid google from counting it as an out going link

Is becoming a member of BlogSwap similar to link-exchanging? I signed up for BlogSwap and have placed their ads in my blogs. So far, I’m not gaining traffic through it. What do you think?
the english guy says:
I like to exchange links, but if I like a site I’ll blogroll them anyway. Also, to help increase PR, link out from your articles. A lot. It really helps.

@ kates
Het congrats for the PR6! :) Sweet!
@ john
A lot of factors affect your PR. One of them is to really have good (high authority) inbound links.
@ Yes I agree. One should be very careful when associating to sites/blogs by exchanging links.
@ lorimer
Seen that kind of system before but I don’t think it’ll work. Besides, as Andre mentioned, it uses Javascript so the linkback has no value at all. Have you tried PinoyBlog.com?
@ theenglishguy
It has become a habit of mine to cross reference my old posts too.

Link exchange doesn’t really work, at least for me. I get link exchange offers as well, but never considered them. But monetizing is a new thing I have to think about. :)
alfie says:
I think link exchange is not necessary for your blog because your blog is popular enough to gain links in a NATURAL WAY. Plus, I have a theory that link exchange will soon be penalize by Google simply becuase it is an implied manipulation of page ranking algorithm. In addition, page rank factor becomes irrelevant nowadays.
julian says:
Google will not penalize link excanges! They however, may devalue the links which are not related to the topic. Moreover, the PR is not an important factor nowadays.
So, if you need your content indexed faster and your site indexed deeply, the only way to achieve this is to gather more backlinks pointing to your site. Just try to exchange links with highly relevant sites only :) The relevancy is the only important factor.
