ASUS U3 Laptop: Turbo Mem, GPS and 3G

I’ve already set my eyes on a MacBook for my next laptop purchase but every once in a while, a souped up rig from Toshiba, Asus, MSI or HP would fit my fancy that I find myself reconsidering my initial decision.

Take for example this Asus U3 which has built-in Global Positioning System and 3G.

Asus U3

– 13.3″ wide screen
– Intel® Coreâ„¢2 Duo Processor T7500 2.20GHz
– Mobile Intel® GM965 Chipset, ICH8M
– WLAN 802.11 a/b/g/n
– nVIDIA GeForce G8400M G External 128MB VRAM
– Turbo Cache 384MB with 1GB system memory; 896M with 2GB system memory
– 1.3M Pixels Video Camera
– DDR2 667MHz, up to 2560MB (1 slot)
– 160 GB SATA HDD
– Intel Turbo Memory
– GPS
– 3G
– Bluetooth 2.0
– Biometric Fingerprint Scanner
– External USB ODD (Combo, Super Multi)
– 1x HDMI, 1x e-SATA, External GPS RF in connector, VGA port/Mini D-sub, 3x USB 2.0 ports, Audio jack, LAN RJ-45, Phone RJ-11 jack, 1394 Type jack, TV-Out (S-video)
– 31.85 x 24.3 x 2.22~3.22cm; 1.75kg (with 3 cell battery)

Actually, any lightweight laptop with built-in 3G/UMTS/HSDPA will surely catch my attention. However, seems the Turbo Memory feature will only work if you run Windows Vista with it.

  1. GPS-enabled laptop eh? Now the gov’t can track me wherever I go. ;)

    And the price tag?

(then again, could I afford one? *sighs*)

  2. Outstanding specs Abe! They should have made it a tablet as well ;-)

The only problem I see is with the battery. It only uses a 3-cell battery. I wonder how long it will last if all the features are activated.

  3. Check out Thinkpad T or X series. I’m currently using X60s. T/X series come with 8-cell batteries that lasts 8 – 10 hours. They came out with biometrics 4 years ago and I think they’ve patented the keyboard lights since no other laptops come with it.

  4. Good hardware but it’s Vista. Apple has good design but hardware seems problematic one way or another. Now someone is suing Apple for delivering 18-bit screens when they should be 24-bit.

  5. I am looking forward of having a laptop but I need to fix my rig first. Please help, anyone. I am looking for Socket 462 mobo, and it’s already phased out. The only place I can look for is tipidpc. Please see my post on my blog. I really need some help since I’m not updated with specs anymore. Thanks very much in advance.

  6. Now if that had been a touch screen I’d line up to buy it too. Too bad the only laptop so far with that functionality that I’ve seen on the phil market is the HP 1000 series

  7. hello … new here!!!

can i ask what’s better to buy.. a mac book or just another laptop
