A source from inside KGB Philippines sent a tip about the latest mass lay off of agents in KGB Philippine’s Sta. Rosa contact center. The head count — 600 and growing.
Employees that were affected came from the SMS Account (where customers sent in SMS questions and agents quickly reply answers pulled from research and online searches).
The news was came out last Monday (February 9, 2009) where people in the Sta. Rosa site were informed that majority of the agents will be let go. One employee recounts what happened over at PinoyExchange:

Bigla na lang sinabi sa amin na kailangan na daw kaming tanggalin sa trabaho meaning “TERMINATED” na kami lahat (ANG NATIRA LANG AY TEAMS 1-8 AT ANG TEAMS 9-39 TSUGI LAHAT INCLUDING THE TEAM LEADERS)..(Sorry correct me if Im wrong with the figures this are just based on those tsugi persons that I have talked to yesterday). Hindi daw nila inaasahan ang mangyayari pero kailangan na mag MASS LAY-OFF.

It looks like KGB was banking on projections that their SMS service would grow so they were aggressively hiring only to realize demand went down over the last quarter and a lot of employees were left without nothing to do on their shifts. However, seems like 600+ heads are too many for a simple overshoot of personnel management. Obviously, the global financial crisis is once again the culprit.
KGB provides services for incoming calls requesting information about directory assistance, movie showtimes, restaurant reviews, traffic, weather and other information with clients in the US and the UK.

my wife is A Agent under SMS account at KGB assigned here in makati yes it is confirmed that 500+ and 50+ (in makati) (almost all in sta. rosa site) was “lay-off” including Team Leaders. Good thing my wife was part of the team that was transferred back to handling calls. It is sad to hear such news.

but on the bright side, those who were included in the “mass lay off” were given a seperation which costs 50-200k.

I’m from kgb as well, I’m so thankful that I’m still employed there. but i feel so sad for those who were laid off., but life’s like that, so better prepare always for the unexpected.Save something for the rainy days always, ika nga.

I have nothing against the UK SMS teams of KGB pero sa akin buti nga sa kanila kasi kung umasta kasi ang yayabang just because na nasa UK track sila. They think kasi na they are one step higher than the ones from US. Siguro talagang dapat mangyari yun sa kanila para ma-realize nila yung ganung bagay. Pwede sana silang ilipat nga teams sa US kaya lang the management thinks na they are more productive sanon-voice at hindi pwede sa mga voice accounts. Kakatawa nga eh…is that because they don’t know how to speak english well? Kasi ang alam ko nung nag-hire sila ng ganun, recruitment did not test their english english communication skills, you just have to be internet savvy.
Either way, kakaawa pa rin pwera na lang dun sa mga mayayabang na UK people.

Apply kayo dun sa IVY I-S Center sa may Dela Costa. UK account din sila pero lead generation lang. Very stable company. In-house sila so di affected sa clients pulling out accounts.

Panibagong lay-off na naman sa kgb sta.rosa. Nung april 27, 2009. Out of roughly 400+ remaining agents nagbawas ulit at nagtira na lang daw ng 250+ CSRs sa Uk sms account nila.
Mas marami from the management team din daw ang na lay-off. But the sad news is temporary lay-off nangyari. Tatawagan sila pag dumami ulit volume ng pumapasok na sms sa kanila. Maximum floating time for the poor csrs at sa iba ay 6 months w/o pay un. Technically, they are still employed kaso wala lang bayad or sweldo.
Marami akong kaibigan na apektuhan sa ginawa nilang yan. Mga mas tenured pa yang mga yan kumpara sa mga nauna nilang tinanggal. Nasa batas ba itong ginawa nila? Sana may makapansin na taga gobyerno sa ginagawa nila. Something’s not right with KGB.

Tama po un… Sa tipo ng ganung accountn super unstable and shaky, dapt k tlgang mgisip2 kung papasok k tlga dun… masasaktan k lng sa bandng huli… hayyyy… please help us po… d po nmin alam kung humane ung ginawa nila samin… ayaw n po nmin umasa n papabalikin p kmi kc sinabi n nila un dun sa unng batch ng nalayoff.. mami2ss ko tlga ung mga team mates ko… pero di ung company…. ayaw ko nmn mgsabi ng mga foul words pero please give us what we deserve…. Finding another job with this kind of status is really hard…. please help…. Sabi nga ng head ng HR department “That’s whatlife is. Life is unfair”. Kung meron man management na nakakabasa nito, bakit di nyo na lang gawin 3 working days kung may awa at may puso kayo.. kawawa naman un may mga family at mga bread winner. kesa naman walang income. Madami naman payag sa ganun kahit magpasurvey pa kayo. mas gusto namin un kahit un mga natira sa SMS account ok lang din sakanila un dahil may puso cla para sa mga nadamay na teamates nila!
By law, an employee that is separated from the company, whether voluntary or involuntary, will be entitled to their basic pay, calculated based on the last days worked, unused VLs, SLs, pro-rated 13th month, tax refund etc..as applicable, except for the separation pay, based on the tenure of the employee. Yung nga sour grapes diyan…wag naman mang api ng mga dati nyong boss! Malamang nung employed pa kayo, panay ang meet and greet with matching smile pa kayo sa mga boss nyo! Mga plastic! Although, I admit, may mga boss na feeling nila pagka-panganak sa kanila ay boss na sila agad at hindi dumaan sa pagiging agent…pero ang sama naman ng pag execute ng judgement, medyo personal at below na belt na yon. May mga ilang TL jan na talagang ipinaglaban at ipinaglalaban ang mga agents nila. They too, feel bad about what happened. Siyempre at the end of the day, kapag nawala ang mga agents, ano pa trabaho nila?! Nakaka-miss lang talaga ang dating hey days ng SMS. Ang may kasalanan ng lahat, yang Global Crisis na yan!

I know how it feels to loose a job coz i’m also part of it. you just have to learn to accept the consequences… hindi lahat ng oras eh maswerte tayo. yang mga taong binanggit mo… di mo ba alam na sila din ang tumulong sa tin. ano magagawa nila? di naman nila kayang tutulan ang desisyon ng kumpanya. di mo lang alam kung pano pinaglaban ng mga yan na maretain tayo kaya lang it’s a business decision. kung may dapat sisihin, tayong mga csr na di nageffort mapabuti ang stats natin. at isa pa, di lang naman tayo nagkaganito ah… marami pang kumpanya ang nagsuffer ng ganito. sana marunong or matuto kang umintindi.
Oo nga pala… Sa panahon ngayon di na dapat maging choosy… Binigyan tayo ng chance na makapasok sa DA. Tama na ang pagiging bitter… At least ako ngayon may trabaho na… Magtraining na ko. Beh!

A lot of people felt betrayed and it’s painful, I know! But to the extent that you have to say bad things to others is not good. Hey thx…it will not help you, instead, it will make you feel more angry to what happened. Good thing to do is just move on, wala na tayo magagawa dyan eh. Kung nautakan man nila tau sa strategy, we can always ask for a legal advice. I don’t know if it’s all legal, although, i’m thinking also of seeking legal advice para malinawan ang ginawa ng kgb. I’m really sad on what happened but I need to move on. Kc it will only make me feel bitter inside eh wala namang mangyayari kung magmukmok aq mag isa. i have a family of my own and they need my support. I know in the long run, we’ll have our pay offs. I have nothing against team 3. Alam ko mababait naman cla.. what I’m tryin to say is maging fair sana. I’ve checked their stats, their cpt is not that good, I know it’s because of US calls.
I also respect the management, except for the MaYayaBanG! …I can see the sincerity from miss mars. To thx: pwede mo laiitin un mga mayayabang pero wag mo na sana isali un mga mababait naman.
FYI, perfectionist ako from January to April, nagkatalo lang dahil sa cpt which is seconds lang ang naging reason. And here’s my explanation for that: cmula nun magkaron ng issue bout sa 2nd lay off, I did my best to satisfy the customers, because I want the volume to come up, lagi ako naghahanap ng info na pwede iadd and I’ll make sure na accurate, syempre mgbabayad cla ng 1 GBP kya kailangan masatisfied para mgtext ulit. Ayoko mawala ang SMS account, ayoko din mawalan ng work ang iba, that’s why I did that. Pero madami naman di nakikisama, kaya aun, natuloy pa din ang lay off and sad to say I’m part of it. Now I don’t know if I did the right thing..Tama ba na isipin ang iba o dapat ba sarili lang ang isave??

Ang dami na talagang naapektuhan ng ginawa ng kgb. Pero we need to move on. But beyond that, kailangan din namin ng nararapat na ibigay sa pinaghirapan namin…..?! I know they won’t do that if it’s not legal but i hope they would give us what we should have in the first place, pinaghirapan namin ang SMS account na yan. I don’t have anything against the management but I want them to reach out to those people they’ve caused hurt. Hire cla ng hire before to the extent na wala nang maupuan sa floor, nakapila na ang mga agents. Then, gn2 na lng bigla mangyayari. They’ll just tell those people “SORRY”?…”that is life”…and “life is unfair…?” Don’t you think it’s fair enough huh?

the 30-day rule only applies to those who are declared redundant or permanently laid-off.
and the 6 months is the maximum. IT CAN BE SHORTER. check your labor code.

: any company is capable of temporarily laying off employees. Ask your friends, relatives who have been working for a while. Other call centers have done it, are doing it, or will do it in the future. Just check the number of companies in the US and even here in the Philippines, call centers or otherwise, who have done it. I won’t name names. Does that automatically make them bad companies?
Is it a crack in the labor code? Maybe. But I think not. Coz labor codes and laws in other countries also have that provision for ages. And believe me, it’s there because businesses have to do it to continue to survive in the long term.
In the manufacturing sector for example, they temporarily lay-off employees say when they run out of raw materials. No raw materials, nothing to manufacture, right? Does it make sense to make employees come to work, pay them, while not doing anything? They go back when shipment of materials arrive again. Makes sense to me. Why the shipment was delayed? It could be a myriad of reasons either within or outside of their control.
For a call center, same thing. Not enough customers for now, no calls to take, equals no work. What’s an owner got to do? Continue to pay employees who have no work…for what? Lose money and eventually close the whole business altogether? Just asking. Of course when the customers come back, you come back too.
In almost all cases, laying-off employees, temporarily or permanently, is the most difficult decision that an owner has to make, it’s a difficult task that your managers in operations or HR have to implement even if in the deepest recesses of their hearts they would rather not. It’s not a case of firing someone for doing a lousy job. That would have made their jobs easy.

i just wanna say to all you members of management and the employees that they can turn around, to stop sugar-coating the issue. it was unfair. period. no more buts, no more explanations. paying this people 2 months after their termination is not even enough to pay for the negligence of your stupid HR forecasting. DA relies on their biggest provider, Sprint-Nextel, everyone in the Call Center Industry knows Sprint’s financial status and not long from now they will soon close. Many people are affected, many lives suddenly changed. However, that is life, nothing is permanent. It is good that we have people like you stating the other side of the coin.

Here it is, you are someone who is trying to symphatize with the people that has been retrenched, and at most, is affected in the emotional aspect. However, you have dipped your fingers too hard into the pie. Some people are right in saying that you don’t have the right to say those things because you are not “one of us”. That you based your observation from a TL that is popular and in the DA now…but why name drop? Why the interest in our affairs whereas you could have just sympathize and not join the bandwagon in the blog? Now, ang tingen sa you is you are EPAL and you get affected. To Everyone affected: It will be better to look for another job…easier said than done. But that is the only option left for us. The company was wrong in projecting that the US market will have a massive response. They should have had a feasibility study and consulted with US sociologist before they ventured into that expansion, Americans are not texters but callers (that is why the voice account is still existing). Ask the HR what will be your options if you will resign at this time, what is the monetary equivalent so that you can start looking for another job, another career. I understand if you people are angry now but there’s nothing we can do but to move on with our lives. A friend of mine was recently put into hiatus by the Kgb_ management and was “temporarily laid off”. It took him some time to swallow the bitter pill. The good thing with him, he went back to the company and applied for the DA. Now, he is scheduled for training this June. The first wave was legal, you may check it on Labor Code of the Philipines Book VI under article 283, though kgb did not file for a 1 month notice, they pay all of the said employees a 1 month pay for the damage (for consideration), and the required benifits which falls under “in good faith” termination, the layoff was legal as well, BUT, did not went to a due process, what i mean is the layoff is not really necesarry, since there are other accounts like D.A and Pizza Hut, dapat ay naitraining muna sila doon without prejudicing their regular employment, if hindi papasa, tsake lng dapat ini- layoff or tinerminate, depending on the employee handbook. It doesn’t make any sense that kgb is still entertaining applicants while there are regular employees on layoff, it’s one way of avoiding regular employees rights.

Guys, check your SSS contributions online. Visit sss.gov.ph and register so you can view your personal SSS records. Make sure that those deductions made from your salaries were really remitted to the System. In my case, the deduction made from my March salary was not reflected. Now, KGB has informed us (the temporarily laid off ones) that they will continue deducting the statutory contributions (SSS/Philhealth) from our salaries (diminimis and paid leaves), contrary to what they told us before that we will just pay individually directly to the System. That leaves us then with practically nothing to receive every payout. In the case of VL/SL, you have to personally file these in the office to be credited, which will entail effort and fare expense on our part. Is KGB resorting to all means possible just to cover up for this “illegal action” of temporary layoff and that due to their present financial status they are now making these deductions. How sure are we that these will duly be remitted? Even the “collatilla” stated in the COE regarding employment status is very unfair. Our work experience and expertise are call center related and yet the same COE is preventing us from getting a job with another call center. Are they pulling a fast one on us. I hope not, because eventually this will redound to them.

Guys, I went to the HR this afternoon, I inquired about the text that I received last Wednesday. They deducted the statutory contributions because we had an income which are taxable. And they also told me that if ever we intend to resign, we will get those benefits that are due us like the separation pay but it will be pro-rated.
Hindi pala taxable, we had an income (from our last payout) na kailangang kaltasan ng statutory contributions (SSS, Philhealth, Pag-Ibig). And I we had a SL conversions & VLs may bawas pa rin daw ng contributions.

Yes, those who were placed under the temporary laid off, I for one, practiced that, that is why, our cpt suffers. As I have said before, my agent jan na natira na for 3 consecutive weeks, he/she had a total of 8 qa fails. Try to check your records, but his/ her cpt was below 100 sec. Try to check also the non-billable nung mga agents na mabibilis, more than 10% yun. Nagtataka nga ako dahil parang hindi sila nakakakuha ng questions na more than 3 mins eh. Parang pag di nila nahanap, they just sent a preset a no charge no answer. Minsan may mga nakakausap ako na ganun nga ung gawa nila, they try to find that question but pag lampas ng 2 mins then yun ang gawa nila. Sana nga ganyan ang ginagawa nila ngayon para ma- win back yung mga customers. Sana, nasa management ka naman, ikaw na ang magbalita sa amin na umaasa parin na makakabalik. Thx.

Talaga palang talamak ang mass hiring ng call center agents dati. Kahit sino sa kalsada pinupulot na lang. Look at yourselves, after nyong ma-layoff, sinasaksak nyo ang kapwa nyo empleyado dati. hi.. i was informed by my ex-team8s about this blog. i worked in kgb and part of those people who was layoffd last february..
just want 2 share my thoughts…
first, when i was hired sa kgb, nagulat ako.. kasi natanggap ako.. eh hindi naman ako magaling magenglish.. eh ang taas ng expectation ko pagsinabing call center (regardless kung voice or non voice).. kala ko ma22to akong magenglish para magamit ko pag nagielts ako.. (hmmm.. mejo natuto naman ako.. grammar..hehehe)
at naging regular pa ko.. i was part of team 5!.. yey! (i miss u guyz).. this is my first job so sobrang saya.. tas dumami na sms agents.. nagulat ako kasi parang ndi sila pang call center.. meron parang meat vendor, security guard, janitor, pulis kotong, atbp. (im so sorry po.. that’s base on my and some people’s observation) hindi naman sa nanghuhusga kami physically, pero sana, ayusin nila sarili nila…
kahit na natanggal ako sa kgb, no bitterness ako sa company.. kasi sobrang dali ng work. wala akong alam na company na tulad ng kgb. napamahal sakin ang kgb kasi petix lang at i have time para makipagkwentuhan.. so sa mga bitter sa kgb, guyz, isipin nyo na lang na minsan sa buhay nyo naexperience nyo yung ganun..at sumweldo kau ng malaki.. with bonus =)
overall, masaya.. memorable.. yun lang nabigla ako nung natanggal ako kasi ang dami naming plans eh..

Hi guys, part ako ng feb 2009 massive layoff. I have moved on. Alam ng ilan sa mga ka-teammate ko kung gaano ako nasaktan nung na tanggal at na delay ang pag deploy sakin sa training palang as applicant for DA account. The thought of “am i waiting for something or nothing?” came. But I chose to move-on while in pain. Nag wait ako hanggang nareceive ko ang call from the HR for the exact training dates. Well, of course, there are standards again which I failed to meet during the course of training. Masakit ma evict the second time sa same company. I felt a little lower than a stupid person. Pero sinu ba mas nakakakilala sa akin, di ba, sarili ko rin? I know kaya ko rin maging voiced csr kaya I never stopped applying under voiced account. Hindi ko habit magpinpoint if who’s at fault. Business is business. Call center is a business. KGB_Phil is not an N.G.O. To survive, they have to know well how to run their business. Bahagi tayo dati or some of us are still part of the company. We have to meet their standards more than them meeting ours. We failed them in some points kaya here we are, out of the scene already. My TL always reminds us to “take care of the business”. That mean, we are expected to treat our job as our own business as well. To always do our best. I was part of the top performing team but based on the set standards, I have failed to meet it perfectly and be let go. I understand, in some points they failed our expectation as well. But, that’s life, though I don’t agree with anyone who say that life is unfair. Lalo na kung marinig ko yan sa isang trainer. Kung sinu man yung trainer na nagsabi nyan, hindi ako na uplift, I pity him/her. I am an educator as well. That is a very negative statement that pushes an individual to feel depressed and to always see the weakside of life more often than its couterpart. Remarks in a Negative statement or tone is not therapeutic, a no-no, and against the principle of teachings / couching. Painful experience ang ma-lay-off or mag-lay-off at traumatic as well kaya let’s be careful with our words kung gusto natin maka-contribute sa healing process ng bawat isa. I think we need to re-learn the law of thermodynamics, if I remember it correctly: In every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. That describes life as well. Very much applicable to all employers and employees. Maybe from there, we all can get on our two feet again and move on. There are call centers nearby waiting for us. If rejection will meet us there, welcome him, then go to the next door. If resignation and losing the backpay will unlock the door of financial success, open the doorway of business opportunity, why should we take hold of them? there are companies which offer communication enhancement skills and call simulation for FREE, enroll. I did, I learned alot from a tesda accreditted training center. You too will benefit from enrolling in such program. Just google it:) Live life, make it colorful. By the way, next week, I’ll be a CSR again under a voiced account of a call center in Tagapo, Sta.Rosa:)

If what I hear is correct. Abrupt Lay-offs not allowed by Labor Code. Got interested in this case.
Filing charges against this company would surely give a winning hand to those who were abruptly laid off.
I have consulted this to some reps and yes ABRUPT LAY OFFS WITH OUT THE 30 NOTICE GIVEN TO DOLE BEFORE HAND IS ILLEGAL (granting it be temporary or not.
File a case in the company I assure you a win.

My college friends told me that i should not enter the call center industry because people there are immorals. And based on my observation it’s somewhat true. I understand that it is due to some physiologic needs. People are becoming immorals because of needs. But guys, you can change their perceptions by NOT acting like you’re acting like now. This thread is really getting out of hand. So much hatred is posted and I believe it’s not healthy anymore. To TULO and other guys there who are insulting peeps that are still employed, try getting a life by finding a new job. Hindi naman ata tama na yang ginagawa nyo na nagname-drop na kayo ng mga tao especially those from the management team. If you guys were really harassed & wronged by the people you just have mentioned above, why not confront them personally?

The TEMPORARY LAY-OFF this company imposed without the 30 day notice is very much ILLEGAL.
I did my own investigations and this company clearly violated the labor code.
“Be it Temporary or not the employees are still entitled to the 30 day notice according to the labor law.”

Given this facts straight from a lawyers mouth is an amazing discovery and did some digging up with DOLE, I found that kgb passed a letter of notice to DOLE just the morning of the said lay-off. Meaning the they laid off their employees first before they passed the notice of LAY OFF to DOLE.
I heard something from a reliable source. Ung mga TLo binigyan na ng redundancy. Tapos ung mga SMS agents need not to worry about aanything. tuloy ung trabaho. Tanggalin nyo na ung mga worries nyo na ma TLO din kyo. Maganda na rin daw kc ung volume. God bless to all.

Just a word of advice. Ask your lawyer friend the exact phrasiology in the Labor Code stating about this discovery of yours. Coz he might just be leading you on. It’s easy to say it’s illegal. But where in the Labor Code is his basis exactly? Or does he have other basis like actual cases? Ask that from him/her and post that here for everyone to read.
For the meantime, and this goes for everyone, be wary and wise with lawyers. Coz some of them ( I say only some) are opportunistic leeches and are just out there to milk you of your money, taking advantage of your dire situation and ignorance. Better yet, check their credentials, where they studied law, years of practice, the cases they’ve handled, won and lost.

All is well that ends well…and the limbo of uncertainty is over.
Now that everything is “normal”, I hope that everyone who were recalled for redundancy yesterday will move on. Its good that the limbo of uncertainty and the cloud of doubt that casts the KGB employees is now over.
It is also good that KGB made good with its promise to give the people a sizable amount of “separation pay”, thou I know that for others, they will see it as a drop in a bucket. Nevertheless, one can start from it, regardless of how one views it.
Now, what is left with the people in the KGB SMS account is to do good with their job. Its good that the text nowadays are a lot and it is almost always queuing, however, it is not a guarantee that it is a stable as it is. Reports says that 3000 people from Canada have signed to do home-based jobs to replace the salaried people from SRCC. If I am the owner of KGB, I will be having more profit if I will be paying on a per unit text as compared to the fixed salary I am paying the people from SRCC. Again, I am a devils advocate and I will never wish ill to anyone but this is an eyeopener for us to think about.

Isa ako sa mga pinalad na nabigyan ng redundancy last July 6. Pinalad dahil meron na kong work, makakatanggap pa ko ng separation pay. Malabo talaga ang 30K kung “separation pay” lang dahil ayon sa batas, we should be given 1 month salaray for every year of service. Sa batch na nabigyan ng redundancy last july 6, kami na pinakamatagal, 1 year lang. So ang separation pay lang namin is P13,500. Pero babayaran pa ng full ang 1 month namin kahit hindi kami pumasok. Tapos meron pang 13 month pay, tax refunds, SL & VL convertion so all in all, aabutin din ng more than 40K. Talagang malabo ang 30K na sinasabi mo Blissie…
