Got a bit intrigued with this article on The Argus UK about a university lecturer bannng students from using Google and Wikipedia, adding that many students don’t use their own brains enough in doing research and analysis.
It has been debated for quite some time that the use of Wikipedia by university students should be discouraged. In recent years, more and more students are relying on the internet for their term papers and doing research. The library has now been ditched in favor of the world wide web.
Prof Brabazon said: “The education world has pursued new technology with an almost evangelical zeal and it is time to take a step back and give proper consideration of how we use it. Too many students don’t use their own brains enough. We need to bring back the important values of research and analysis.” She calls this phenomenon The University of Google.
She said thousands of students across the country, including those at the universities of Brighton and Sussex, were churning out banal and mediocre work by using what search engines provided them.
During my college years, when the internet was sting young and not a lot of information was available online, most of the research that I do came from stacks of books, CD encyclopedias and microfiches. It was tedious, very time consuming, expensive (tons of print-outs) and sometimes the statistical data I gather are outdated.
Back then, I didn’t know Google. I was using Alta Vista and Yahoo most of the time while Wikipedia was not yet born.
“I ban my students from using Google, Wikipedia and other websites like that. I give them a reading list to work from and expect them to cite a good number of them in any work they produce.”
She said young people were finishing education with shallow ideas and needed to learn interpretative skills before starting to use technology.
Compare that to today’s vast resources on the internet. Student programmers can always sneak into Google Code Search and copy a snippet of code, chem students can read up on how to mix nitric and sulfuric acids and end up cooking trinitroglycerin, or totally copy and paste and entire Wikipedia entry on Magellan’s discovery of the Philippines islands.
Of course, not everyone will do that. But, with the right amount of academic pressure, sometimes these kids will do just about anything just to get a passing mark. Most will go the path of least resistance.
Still, I think it’s all up to the students. To those who’ve just graduated recently or are still studying, is the internet a necessary tool in your research?

“Sometimes you need a negative motivator to build your self-esteem,” Bartmann says. He explains that if you have a positive self-image, you can separate specific failures from who you really are. “Any failure can be overcome if you don’t over-generalize it,” he says. “You have to see it as something that happened to you. It doesn’t determine your real value. The main cause of failure is the inability to deal with self-doubt.”
Bartmann worked hard to grow and develop into a successful entrepreneur. He took the high school equivalency test, went to college, graduated law school in 1975 and practiced law for 5 years before starting his first company in real estate development. This gave him the experience needed for his grand entry into the oil and gas drilling business.
During the mid 1980’s, Bill Bartmann took over a bankrupt company, Hawkeye Pipe Services, a pipe manufacturer for oil rigs. He acquired bank loans to fund the business, making sales of $1 Million per month until October of 1985 when prices fell dramatically, forcing him to close the company, $1 Million in debt.
Bartmann was in deep trouble; creditors were hounding him, threatening lawsuits and re-possession of his car. He was determined to make good on his debts; with the help of his former chief operations officer, he began scanning business opportunity ads.
Bartmann was able to convince a bank to loan him $13,000 and he went into the debt collections business, building a successful business worth an estimated $3 to $5 billion! In September, 1998, he appeared on the cover of Inc. Magazine with the headline, “The Billionaire Nobody Knows.”
Unfortunately, just one month later, Bartmann learned that a business partner embezzled millions of dollars; soon the accusation of fraud was made and his bonds became liabilities. By July, 1999, Bartmann declared bankruptcy. “When sharks smell blood in the water, it’s too late,” said Bartmann.
By December, 2002, Bartmann was indicted for fraud, even though his partner swore that he had no knowledge of the embezzlement. After spending $4.5 Million to defend himself, he was cleared of all charges one year later.
Bill Bartmann is a fighter! “I’m not bitter because look at what I still have,” he says, referring to his wife, two daughters, two grand-kids and money in the bank. “This is what success is really about,” he tells audiences at his Billionaire Business School seminars, which drew 280,000 attendees in 2007.
Bartmann says that most people do not possess the basic business management skills needed to maintain a business, which is why many new businesses fail. His mission is to combat this problem which is why he recently launched Billionaire U which offers online courses for the low cost of $100 per year. Bartmann said, “I’m not making as much money as I did with my last company, but I’m having a lot more fun.”

advice pls…
my son is presently studying in I.S and in 10th grade. recently lang exams nila at nagkaroon ako ng problem with his Math teacher. Math exam nila lasted for 2 days as the teacher said they ran out of time. I think ok lang na may continuation as long as hindi nakikita ng students ang rest ng exam. In my opinion kung nakita na nila kung ano yun susunod na gagawin nila,teachers are just openning the door/opportunity para sa students to search for that exam online. what happened was nakita ng anak ko online yun exact exam nila and he made his way and yes it was my child’s fault – inamin naman nya ginawa nya sa teacher and all are just in my child’s head kasi d naman sila pwede to put a note on their pockets and they are just few in the classroom (6-8 students lang) And I can tell na sobrang lungkot ang anak ko sa mistake na nagawa nya then I waited for the teacher to give me a call to let me know what happened pero wala – I think he has an intention not to tell the parents about it at surprise nalang sa report card. di ba as parents need natin malaman kung ano nangyayari sa anak natin in school. So I left a msg for him in the school offc to give me a call and am open to talk of what happened, pero when he calls me parang gusto na nya agad i close ang conversation with me sabi ko pls give my child a second chance to re-take the exam – sabi nya “am sorry I can’t help you! and I am going to write it on the report card! and I don’t know how many times did he cheat” ang sakit para sa kin,d naman ibig sabihin eh lagi nyang ginagawa yun at sa school na yun na lumaki ang anak ko, some of the teachers were just laughing to his math teacher, sabi nila my child is too smart para makita yun exam on line and d nya dapat ibinigay yun eksaktong nasa net, it should be random. so as in 0 grade ang final exam nya sa Math. Naawa ako sa anak ko!
Ang anak ko just turned 15 at isip bata pa, siguro dahil nag iisa sya at walang kapatid.. as in baby pa sya sa haws talaga!
am not trying to hv a discussion or anything… just wanted an advice. deserve ba ng anak ko ang second chance to re-take the exam? at tama bang kopyahin ng teacher yun exam online na ibibigay nya sa students? dahil ba Filipino kami kaya walang second chance? lilipat na rin sya ng ibang school, magiging problema ba nya yun?
by the way ang teacher nya is from UK, and the school is british curriculum.

i am a student and i strictly believe that students are relying too much on the internet. some even with the presser of getting a A* will end up cheating. most of us after researching on the net will have no clue what we have read. we just copy and past the information and give it to the teacher expecting that we will pass.
despite this matter i also believe that this internet is a very good tool to help us in our daily lives. but it is mostly how responsibly you use the net that matters. and if you Analise this, if you close down the internet, think of the robbing bank accounts online that will stop.
