Samsung i9100 Galaxy S II announced

Samsung’s Galaxy S’s big brother, the Galaxy S2 (i9100), has been unveiled with a much better display and hardware specs. Update: see our full review of the Samsung Galaxy S2 here.

Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 proccessor
4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus display @ 480×800 pixels
Gorilla Glass display
1GB RAM
16GB/32GB internal storage
HSDPA 21Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps
WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA
Bluetooth 3.0 + HS
GPS w/ aGPS support
8MP autofocus camera with LED flash
1080p video recording
2MP front-facing camera for video calls
FM Radio Tuner
Li-Ion 1650mAh battery
Android 2.3 Gingerbread

The Galaxy S2 comes with an optional NFC support (Near-Field Communication) though I don’t see any real-world benefits for it right now. Much like most other big-ass Android smartphones (e.g. HTC Desire HD), the 480×800 pixel resolution on a 4.3″ display could be a bit of a disappointment to some.

Expected release is before end of this quarter though there’s no indicated price yet (my hunch is that it will be within the vicinity of the first Galaxy S which is like 32k to 35k).

    @boo
For tech-savvy users I concur that it’s a non-issue but not everyone wants to root/hacktify their device.

who needs official samsung updates when devs cook custom ROMS a 100x better than the stock ones..

And now Samsung has no reason to release Android 2.3 on any of their current phones. Want Gingerbread? Get a new phone.

Why the double standard? You also have to wait for the next Galaxy S.

If you need a smartphone right now then both the iPhone 4 and the current Galaxy S are fine and timely choices, since if last year’s launches were an indication it’ll take 3-4 months after US launch before they make it here.

Ideally, you’ll likely see them on Globe by 3rd quarter.

Well before the iP4 (iP3GS), it’s wait for the iP4. Now it’s wait for the iP5. I’ll wait for the iP7, quality and all. But then again, thus the reason why I don’t really like 4.3″ screens with low pixel density. Let’s wait and see where that 4.5″ Hitachi screen with a pixel density of about 360 dpi (?) at 1280×720 will be used.

but still, the hardware specs makes one drool XD.

gotta agree with cosmic on the apps for android but I have high hopes that the android market will get more “quality apps”
    (currently using galaxy spica)

    @BRUNO

Yes, I am a fanboy for high quality.

After all when I spend 35k on a smartphone I don’t expect to see pixels, which is what you’ll get if you look hard enough on 800×480 resolution 4.3″ displays. :)

Low resolution a deal breaker? Haha! Having no SD slot is a deal breaker. Dropping calls because you didn’t hold your phone the way Steve Jobs told you to is a deal breaker. Having your phone coated in a glass that shatters when it falls is a deal breaker. Having to use itunes to transfer files is a deal breaker. Having even one thing common with you, ie, iphone user/apple fanboy, is the biggest deal breaker of them all!

“Just wait for new iPhone” – typical fanboi lines.

  19. Avatar for Paul Paul says:

Aye, the low resolution is a deal breaker.

That retina display on the iPhone 4 really spoils you, and considering the next version will have upgraded CPU and memory specs it’s better to wait for that if you plan to spend 35k or more on a smartphone.

    1Gb RAM pa
    plus Gorilla for the win!

(Gorilla Glass is an unscratchable, unshatterable material used as a protective window for your mobile phone)
