Just got an SMS confirmation from Globe that they’ve already rolled out and servicing customers on their WiMax network. I’m still getting the details but the Inquirer ran the story last night that it will be 512Kbps at Php799 per month. This service will certainly be competing against Smart Bro’s Fixed Wireless offering.
Will update this post once I get the copy of the press release. Intel’s timing was just right when we had the WiMax forum yesterday.
Here’s part of the Press Release I got:
Globe is first in the Philippines to launch Wimax. Available starting March 2009, the company’s WIMAX package is a high-speed Internet plan that lets users surf the web at speeds of up to 512kbps for only PHP795 per month. The package also comes with an aggressive money-back guarantee. “We challenge anyone with a competitive wireless subscription to try out our Wimax-backed plans. We are so confident with our service that we challenge you try out our connection, risk-free. Should you be unhappy with the connection within one month from installation, we’ll give you your money-back, no questions asked,†says Menchi Orlina, head of the Consumer Broadband Business Group.
The service is initially available in selected areas in South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Globe will continue to roll-out hundreds of WiMAX sites, as a complement to its existing DSL and 3G internet facilities, to ensure the internet gets to every Filipino who needs it.
Interested households may call (02)919-8888 or visit the nearest Globe Payments and Services centers for further inquiries.
WiMAX is short for Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access. It is a standards-based technology designed to enable the deployment of wireless broadband access as a cost-efficient alternative to cable and DSL; WIMAX also has improved reach and can cover distances greater than those covered by other wireless technologies like WiFi, CDMA, or 3G.
Globe’s network is considered the first and biggest 2.5Ghz WiMAX (802.16e) broadband network in South East Asia.
hi. I’ve been using globe wimax since mar 17, and i’m actually satisfied. i’ve been watching movies online almost everynight and it works fine, some buffer at the start, but fine all the way.
i’ve also tried webcam and voice, crystal clear.
not bad at all.
YUNG SMART NAMIN DATI KAYA NYA KAHIT ILANG TABS AT KAHIT ILANG DOWNLOADS PA YAN….
PAANO BA GUMAGANA YANG WIMAX BAKIT ANG BAGAL? MGA 6 KILOMETERS LANG NAMAN ANG LAYO NG GLOBE TOWER SA LOCATION KO TAPOS NASA TAAS PA KAMI,,,,MERON BANG MAY ALAM KUNG BAKIT GANYAN YAN?
wow! it’s very fast…. amazing
@ilto
i couldn’t see the link between farmers-to-WiMax, isn’t a giant leap to co-exist the two?
ok lang maski anong klase yan, yong 799peso is not for the poor it is still for employed person. how about the others!!!!! like the farmers?
may question po ako mei alam po ba sa inyo kung papaano mag setup ng wireless internet sa bahay.. etong wimax ang gamit ko… meron na akong router pero hindi ko alam kung papaano maiconnect dito… ayaw tlga eh.. tulong po..
Btw,I would just like to comments on the new Smartbro Plug-In (prepaid) or Plan P1995 just bought from Smart
Wireless Center at Robinsons Galleria. It’s so slow that it took 1.5 – 2 mins. before you get connected. But you are being charge already even you are not yet connected. When you are disconnecting, it also took a minute before you are properly disconnected. The more it becomes slower the better for Smart bcoz we are being charged Php10.00 every 30 or fraction of a 30 mins. Just don’t know if this Plan P1995 will last forever.
wondering if available d2 yan sa gumaca, quezon. We are tired of Digitel. 1mbps contract nmin for 1500php but were only reaching like 384kbps.. >_> so kung meron wimax d2 we rather switch to that kahit 512kbps pa lng available nila. I wish available na yan d2.
I think the speed is worth for its price.
As of the moment Smartbro ok na ako, medyo tamed na sila, decreased na ang downtime ng internet connection nila since mid-last year.
Wow new technology good news for the phil customers
wish ko lang sana wag nilang kalimutan ang BACKHAUL dahil once na mag click e2 at dumame ang customer theyll just have a bottleneck and another lousy wireless ISP. If you know how smartbroken works then youll know what i mean.
nag-wimax agad samantalmay wimax pang nalalaman itong globe na ito pero yung visibility prepaid nyo hindi nyo inaayos ang service kahit HSDPA laging bumabagsak.
Another first from Globe!
512 kbps is a bit slowwww :(
but still a good news :)
it also does not mean “the last or best option”. however, Wimax wireless technology just really works on greater distances. and it should have greater bandwidth. so the 512kbps limit is artificial to generate greater profits for those who have no other broadband options
if you’re within range of other high-speed “last mile” options, then Globe Wimax is expensive. but if Wimax is the only thing that will reach you, then it’s a good deal.
btw, “last mile” just means “final leg to customer”. it does not mean “the only option”
wimax 512kbps, ok na yun! mura naman, if you’re browsing the net, and just watch youtube ok na yun, now I hope they incorporate wimax in cellphone, panalo yun!
smart nga nasa 384kbps, tapos mas mahal pa. maglalagay ka pa ng dambuhalang antenna.
hi-speed = 512K
someone in globe marcom is still in 1998
is this really the best that south east asia can come up with?
No harm in trying guys since it’s money back guarantee.
Hope it’s not a trap.
at least much more promising than smart’s P999 plan right? hope competition never stop in this country – for a better good of course.
As far as I know, they have started selling in Cebu already…
They are using Huawei BM625 ata as indoor CPE…
May Wimax device na ba si GLOBE?
Kelan implementation nyan after 5 years pa?!
