Messenger desktop app to shut down for Windows and Mac on December 15

The Messenger desktop app is set to be shut down for Windows and Mac users on December 15, 2025. This was confirmed by TechCrunch, who spoke with Meta officials last Thursday.

Users will no longer be able to log into the apps and will be redirected to Facebook for Messenger access. In addition, Meta is recommending deleting the app once it stops functioning as per this help portal.

The company has already begun notifying users, with Mac users getting a 60-day grace period before the app becomes unusable. As for Windows users, users are encouraged to use the web version or Facebook desktop app.

Meta’s also advising users to enable secure storage and to set a PIN to preserve chat history across devices. To check out the former, just go to Messenger settings and tap Privacy & Safety.

From there, just click on End-to-End Encrypted Chats and click under Message Storage. Your messages should be accessible through the web version and be synced across devices from there.
