ChatGPT is now launching group chats globally for all users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, OpenAI announced on Thursday. This update comes a week after the feature was tested in selected regions like Japan and New Zealand. The rollout allows people to chat together with ChatGPT in one shared space.
The new feature lets up to 20 users join a single conversation where they can plan, work, and exchange ideas. OpenAI says this makes ChatGPT more than a one-on-one tool, turning it into a place where friends, classmates, families, or co-workers can collaborate in real time. ChatGPT can help search, summarize, explain, and compare information while users talk in the same thread.

Users can start a group chat by inviting others through a link or adding them directly. Personal settings and memory stay private to each user. OpenAI notes that adding new people creates a separate new thread so the original chat remains unchanged.
ChatGPT also knows when to respond and when to stay quiet unless it is tagged. It can react to messages with emojis and identify people using their profile photos. OpenAI says the goal is to make ChatGPT feel like part of real group conversations, supporting teamwork and decision-making.
The release follows other recent updates, including GPT-5.1 and the launch of Sora, as the company continues expanding ChatGPT into a more social and collaborative platform.
