According to a recent IDC report, RIM’s Blackberry beat out the Apple iPhone 2-to-1 in the first quarter of 2008. Despite Apple’s bulling marketing and hype, it looks like the Blackberry is still king of the smartphones. Can’t believe it either.

The report found Research in Motion selling the most smartphones in the United States for the first quarter of 2008 grabbing a majority share of 44.5% versus Apple’s iPhone which only got 19.2% (1Q2008). The trend is pointing towards RIM as well which only had 35.1% the previous quarter versus the iPhone’s 26.7% (4Q2007).
In 3rd place is Palm with 13.4%, thanks to the introduction of the new $99 Centro. Samsung took 4th place at 8.6%.
Apple is rumored to be launching the 2nd generation iPhone with GPS and 3G built-in as well as offering a subsidized price of $200, hoping that it can get back more shares of the smartphone market from RIM/Blackberry.
