Philippines ranks #1 in Facebook penetration

In a recent market research by comScore, the Philippines ranked #1 with the highest Facebook users as a percentage of internet users in the country. They also included Twitter and LinkedIn to give it a better perspective.

1. Philippines
> Facebook: 93.9%
> Twitter: 16.1%
> LinkedIn: 1.9%
> Internet Use: 29.7%

Social network penetration is incredibly high in the Philippines, reaching 95%. Facebook is the country’s most popular website, more so than Google, and has a penetration rate of 93.9%. The Philippines is also the eighth most popular country for Twitter use on a global scale, with a penetration rate of 16.1%. The popularity of photo sharing has increased by 46% in the country in one year, largely due to Facebook. Social networking is so popular among Filipinos, the country has been nicknamed “The Social Networking Capital of the World.” {source}

Israel came in second with 91%, Turkey at 90.9% and Chile at 90.2%. The two other SEA country that made it to the top 10 is Indonesia at 87.5% and Malaysia at 88.4%.

However, in terms of absolute percentage of the population, Malaysia is higher than the Philippines — 57% of Malaysians are on Facebook while only 28% of Filipinos are on Facebook.

The research also included penetration of other social networking sites like Twitter and LinkedIn. While Twitter usage is relatively high, LinkedIn (which has been up since 2003) scored very low. LinkedIn so a social networking site for professionals.

  1. I am also a LinkedIn user, but seldom check it. Yep, it’s good for applying for jobs in abraod :-)

Philippines, Text Capital of the world, now Social Networking Capital of the world. Ayaw talaga magpaiwan ng mga Filipino hehehe Go Pinoys! :-)

    • Lola ko nag fafacebook haha.

  2. i wouldn’t be surprised if in the near future facebook will fold just like friendster. hehehe… asian traffic is really bad for online communities.. :)

  3. Implication since RP was recognized as texting capital -> Oligarchs will continue to rule this country

  4. It is funny though that a lot of people think that Facebook = Internet. Like the only website they check is facebook. Maybe *Yahoo* sometimes to search for something or research their homework. Lol.

    • Nakakahiya? For what? You have a “slave” mentality. You will be inferior for the rest of your life if you don’t change your attitude.

  7. i think many Philippines people spend more time in front of the computer..

Dapat 5 out of 10 lang tong survey ninyo.

  9. So, ok percentage of internet users rank # 1. what about absolute percentage of the population? What’s our rank?

  10. Kawawang Pinas… madalas #1 on trivial matters.

  11. omg pinoy pride! talagang world class ang pinoy! charice who?

  12. Proud to be part of the 6.1% na hindi nakiki-uso sa FB. :))

  13. philippines being the social networking capuital of the world? after being the text capital of the world? there’s nothing wrong with technology determinism but i was hoping to understand a social science perspective in this fact.

  14. It looks like they used the ITU 2009 stats for internet users as a basis. My guess is the numbers are pretty off by at least 20%-30%

  15. I was a facebook user for past three years, and I find it useful in the sense than I can go in touch my my classmates in high school.

  16. what is so good about this it only shows how insecure at papansin mga pinoy
