Apple reportedly inks a deal with OpenAI to integrate generative AI features to the iPhone

Apple is reportedly inking a deal with OpenAI to bring its artificial intelligence features to the iPhone, according to sources close to the matter.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed in a report that Apple is finalizing an agreement to integrate ChatGPT features into its upcoming iOS 18. This move comes alongside ongoing talks with Google regarding their own AI chatbot, Gemini.

While the Google deal hasn’t materialized yet, the OpenAI partnership suggests Apple is prepping to unveil a wave of AI-powered features at their upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

All three companies — Apple, OpenAI, and Google — remained tight-lipped on the matter.

Recent comments from Apple CEO Tim Cook further fueled the speculation. Cook himself is a user of ChatGPT, but previously acknowledged “a number of issues that need to be sorted” before widespread integration. He did, however, assure that new AI features would be introduced “on a very thoughtful basis.”

Adding another layer to Apple’s AI strategy, rumors suggest the company will try to host most of the AI features on the device itself. This means Apple’s powerful A-series and M-series chips will shoulder the heavy lifting for many AI tasks, while some processes might be offloaded to Apple’s data centers.

This approach could offer a two-fold advantage: faster performance due to reduced reliance on the cloud and potentially improved user privacy by keeping data on the device.
