SOL, a ruggedized solar-powered laptop

Canada-based WeWi Telecommunications Inc. has came up with a new laptop that is designed for use in military, education and developing nations where electricity is limited. Meet SOL, a ruggedized laptop that is powered by the sun.

SOL is basically a laptop that is outfitted with a set of foldable solar panels at the back of its lid. When fully charged the SOL can last for an impressive 8 to 10 hours. If it runs out of juice just unfold the solar panels and it will run directly off solar energy or charge the battery in under 2 hours.

The SOL is equipped with a 13.3-inch WXGA (1366 x 768) LCD screen, a 3 megapixel web camera and a 320GB HDD. Running under the hood is an Intel Atom D2500 dual-core CPU, 4GB of RAM and Ubuntu Linux. So not only the SOL runs on free energy, it runs on free software as well.

There’s also the SOL Marine version which has everything the SOL has but with the addition of waterproofing.

SOL has a price tag of $350 or around Php15,000 while the SOL Marine costs $400 or around Php17,000. Availability is yet to be announced but is expected to launch first in Ghana, Africa.
