Acer Liquid goes Android and SnapDragon

Listen to article

Acer’s famous for notebooks but their first foray into the smartphone market didn’t go quite well. Now, they’re back with a vengence — the Acer Liquid is powered by a SnapDragon processor and Android OS.

The Acer Liquid isn’t their most powerful smartphone to date as the neoTouch that came out earlier had a Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 1GHz CPU running Windows Mobile 6.5.

Acer Liquid
3.5″ capacitive touchscreen @ 480×800 pixels
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8250 768MHz
256MB RAM / 512MB ROM
up to 16GB on microSD
3G/HSDPA 7.2Mbps/HSUPA 2Mbps
WiFi 802.11 b/g
5MP AF camera
GPS w/ aGPS support
Bluetooth w/ A2DP
Android OS v1.6 with Acer UI 3.0

Acer’s laptops have been tested for build-quality for many years now but their smartphone line has yet to be proven. I think they got the Acer DX650 locally but haven’t bumped into one of the units ever.

The Acer Liquid was announced November of 2009 and released last December but has yet to reach the Philippines. We’re not really sure if Acer Philippines will release the unit locally but it’s nice to see a non-HTC smartphone running Android these days. So far, we only have the HTC Magic and HTC Hero so having another competing product is always good for the market.

Just bought this unit for my wife. It cost SGD799. Running Android 1.6 Donut. Good thing about this is you don’t have to worry about firmware updates and apps (no need to jail break) as they are freely available in the Android Market.

@MIKE – Try using an Amoled screen under direct sunlight. :P 8mp? Even the newly released N1 is only at 5mp, so why would you expect an older non-google model to top that? Acer Liquid (HK$3,380)is a steal if you compare it to HTC’s Budget Android, Tattoo (HK$2,998).

Besides, being the first Snapdragon android a couple of months ago (despite being underclocked) made Acer a viable player already. Not to mention the fact that it wants to release 3-5 android phones in 2010.

If you’re looking for an 8mp Amoled android, you’ll have to wait for Samsung’s M100s or other android devices to come at a later date. :)

@irv – Liquid is rumored to get eclair (2.0/2.1)

the market is about to be flooded with v2.0 and v2.1 smartphones. this thing is already outdated by the time it reaches our shores.

Good choice of OS Android but why v1.6? No AMOLED screen and should have 8mp cam or higher. Very demanding but new player like Acer must impress us consumers with “more value for money” specs for them to be competitve in the market. LOL
