Micron mass-produced world’s first LPDDR5 DRAM for smartphones

Listen to article

Micron Technology announced that the world’s first LPDDR5 DRAM for high-end smartphones has been mass-produced.

Micron’s LPDDR5 DRAM packs 12GB in a single die, operates up to 6.4Gbps, has 50% faster data access speed, and consumes 20% less power compared to the previous generation. As a result, the smartphones’ AI engine will be able to use the artificial intelligence engine built into the processors of mobile devices at full capacity and extend its battery life by 5-10%.

While LPDDR4X RAM may be enough for most use cases, LPDDR5 presents serious gains for high-end smartphones. The use of high pixel count cameras, the use of multiple apps at the same time, and future apps will benefit from the increased bandwidth that LPDDR5 provides. Micron believes that the production of LPDDR5 RAM and 5G will open doors for future applications that require more bandwidth and capacity.

Starting the first half of 2020, Micron will focus on 8GB and 12GB configurations but expects the phone’s memory to increase to 16GB in the second half of 2020. The upcoming Xiaomi Mi 10 would be the first smartphone to use LPDDR5 memory.
