New rumor suggests some iPhone 15 to support 35W USB-C charging

One of the biggest changes coming to the iPhone 15 series is the replacement of the Lightning port with a USB Type-C port. Now, new report claims that the upcoming series will support up to 35W charging speed—which either is an improvement or a disappointment.

Well, at least “some of the new iPhone models” will support 35W charging as ‘industry sources’ told 9to5Mac. There is no mention of the specific models, but it is likely to Pro variants will get faster charging speeds.

This is a significant improvement over the iPhone 14 Pro, limited to only 27W, while the vanilla model only having 20W. Recharging the iPhone 14 Pro Max at these speeds takes about two hours.

In contrast with other brands, Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra charges up to 45W, from zero to 100% in less than an hour. While the like of Xiaomi puts Apple to shame with the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G for example (not even a flagship) supports up to 120W charging speeds—charging the phone in just about 19 minutes.

Previously, we reported that the iPhone 15 features a USB-C port with a chip that may limit charging and data speeds or simply identify Apple-certified cables and adapters.

While there is currently no confirmation on the chip’s actual function, other reports suggest that it may be just Thunderbolt-compatible.

For a company that enforces control, this seems to be a clever tactic to limit compatibility within their own products only.

We have seen that Apple has removed the charging brick from the iPhone retail box. And they’re smart enough to introduce MFi (Made for iPhone) USB-C cables and adapters to maximize profit while still complying with the EU law.

Do take these speculations with a grain of salt as we’re yet to see the iPhone 15 series in full detail as it launches next month.
