Nokia C5: Smartphone for the Masses?

Nokia’s new C-Series phone is out with its first model — the Nokia C5, powered by S60 platform which we normally see in high-end, full-featured smartphones from Nokia.

Nokia C5
2.2″ screen @ 240×320 pixels
up to 16GB via microSD (2GB included)
HSDPA 10.2 Mbps, HSUPA 2 Mbps
Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
3.15MP autofocus camera, LED flash
Symbian OS v9.3 Series 60 rel. 3.2
Stereo FM radio with RDS
GPS with aGPS support and Ovi Maps 3.0

What’s conspicuously missing is WiFi connectivity. Li-Ion battery is also rated at just 860mAh.

Is the Nokia C5 an attempt to bring the smartphone to the masses? If the expected retail price of Php8,500 is any indication, it looks like it. Should be out before end of 2nd quarter.

  1. not bad at all! and you can never use the full potential of a smartphone unless you are running on a telco plan.

  2. sweet! i’ll probably get one myself… the telcos will surely give it as free phones with their plans!

  3. awww :( its lacking something… the wifi.

  4. Was thinking it was still pricy till I’ve noticed its also a pocket GPS which makes it quite handy.

  5. wow, it reminds me the C5 extension project. but yeah lack of wifi connectivity makes me disregard that phone.

  6. Wow, impressive. Only if it weren’t running Symbian. Those who have used S60 and other Symbian-based phones know that they tend to slow down really after a while.

Too bad there’s no Wifi, however, with most telcos offering unlimited browsing, it may not be that bad. You’d have to spend a few extra bucks every now and then if you want to surf or maybe signup for an unlimited data plan.

  7. with a 2.2″ screen i think browsing the web is out of the question… maybe that’s why wifi isn’t integrated since it’s mostly going to be used for mobile chat or GPS…

  8. No wifi is like a pebble on your shoe, it might be a small thing to some but its really bothers you but for 8.5 k it might be a a good deal… not for my wishlist…

  9. This may be the cheapest GPS device available in the market especially with the maps being free for life.

  10. of course you can never have it all.. specially to on the price. :) I guess this is something to introduce people to smart phone and allow them to learn that a smart phone is not that totally different from a regular Nokia phone. Then eventually they will buy that fully featured smart phones.

  11. No WiFi?! Now that sucks! Plus the small screen is just not enough for web browsing.

Though it would be useful for sending Tweets almost 24/7 thanks to the unlimited data plans now offered.

  12. Cseries for Core series. the mid-specs phone of Nokia. Probably there will be an enable wifi cseries this year when Nokia Event kicks off.

  13. this is a looker! one question though, with the acceptance of dual-active sims, why won’t nokia bring it to their phones? A good number of professionals who switched networks or numbers would atleast want the old number active while being able to attend to both everyday! Why not, Nokia?

  14. wow, smartphone for the masses. just as when all the world is turning to pda phones.

  15. no wifi is no biggie, imo. i’d rather have hsdpa over wifi since its a lot cheaper and easier to access than wifi hotspots. but then again, most SM Malls now offer free wifi, hehehe.

  16. I guess Yugatech readers are not the market. This is an upgrade to the 6120c (already on S60) and the other Series 40 phones. I for one still prefer candybars.

  17. @Dan – you are wrong. i’ve been using smartphones since 2003 and i’ve never been in any plan since. right now, i am using my smartphone in just about anything i do with my laptop.

to everyone – no wifi? goodness, it has 3.5G and if that is not good enough for you then move on. ang mura lang ng 3G sa pinas, 5 pesos sa 15 minutes. tapos ang globe may plan na 50 pesos sa whole day. saan ka pa?!

  18. @whoa
They’re probably banking on SOMEONE ELSE’s connection (free Wifi) rather than pay for it even if it’s that cheap.

  19. what’s so smart about this C-series? I mean, what features do a smartphone should have? no wifi? i guess this ain’t smart after all ;)

    • @anonymous – the smart in smartphone refers to the OS used in the device.

  20. @anonymous

OS! operating system. do your research! you are just one click away from google. you aren’t so smart afterall.

  21. looks nice (is it thin as it looks?), and with reasonable price but would have preferred a phone with longer battery life

  22. Okay na sana, kaya lang ang iksi ng battery life.

  23. C stands for consumer, kaya nga pang masa ang c-50 e

  24. Actually the 8.5K is already a value for money for that phone, the thing is there is also a cheaper phone like Nokia 5230 which looks better than this C5 smartphone.

  25. for 8.5k? i think i will still go for china made blackberry phones with wifi.got mine for 380dirhams or 4.5k php. with wifi and gps connectivity,w/ shortcuts for facebook, google, msn, yahoo search, imi chat, yahoo messenger and an opera mini as a browser.it also has 2 active standby sim slots, an FM radio, and a push email. eto pa ang malupit, pwede ring gawing TV. hehehe san ka pa?

  26. i need to know stores with this phone and price near the price above.

  27. i love this phone.., it looks really nice.., and have great features.., ok lng din khit wlang wifi ayoko nmn nun eh..

  28. Hope you could review this phone. This is a promising “bestseller”, just like N6300 years ago.

  29. i have this! just got it last sunday july 18,2010. got it for P7,500 at Angeles City.battery lasted me 3 days. ginagamit ko lng png txt at konting twag. ok lng kht wla wifi my samsung star has wifi naman.

  30. will the frequent use of this phone as modem damage it?

  31. awwwwwwww…Wi-fi….well that sucks. I use wi-fi more than texting!

    What a pity :/

  32. dude??? here in Philippines, no wifi doesn’t matter at all. wanna know why??? ‘coz when you’re using Globe Sim and when you know free internet tricks, then this 3.5G that this phone has, 8K won’t be a waste !! i’m using Nokia C5 ryt now. COOL !! free browsing and free streaming flash videos..

  37. Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the internet the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
