OPPO X 2021 rollable concept smartphone now official

OPPO has officially unveiled its latest concept smartphone, the OPPO X 2021, during the OPPO Inno Day.

The OPPO X 2021 rollable concept smartphone highlights a flexible display and structural stacking, bringing users a more natural interactive experience. The concept handset flaunts OPPO’s three proprietary technologies, including the Roll Motor powertrain, 2-in-1 Plate, and self-developed Warp Track high-strength screen laminate.

OPPO’s structural engineers came up with a custom-developed Roll Motor powertrain to make a display that can be automatically retracted and extended smoothly. The handset is equipped with two drive motors to generate a constant force. It ensures that even a sudden pull or push will not damage the display.

It shows off a continuously variable OLED display with a measurement from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches, allowing users to adjust the display’s size based on actual needs.

Moreover, OPPO designed a whole bearing with a slider on the display side of the phone. The display moves along this central axis, and the slider ensures to follow a smooth arc. They settled on a 6.8mm diameter for the central axis to bend the display almost without a trace.

OPPO also acquired a new “dynamic frame,” equipped with a fixed frame and a sliding frame. As the display changes in size, the sliding frame and the rear battery cover move off the panel for protection.

Furthermore, it makes use of its proprietary Warp Track high-strength screen laminate, which is geared with high-strength steel as the main material. The laminate is only 0.1-millimeter thin. Along with the linear patterns etched on the surface, the Warp Track laminate increases the display’s flexibility as it bends while delivering sufficient support. The Warp Track,high-strength screen laminate, s similar to a caterpillar track: bringing reliable protection without increasing resistance.

Users only need to tap the phone to automatically adjust the screen size to match the aspect ratio, giving out a full-screen viewing experience in various uses.

Compared with other foldable displays with fixed sizes, rollable displays are infinitely adjustable between their minimum and maximum sizes, to bring more possibilities for productivity, entertainment, and daily use.

The OPPO X 2021 rollable concept device culminated in OPPO’s ongoing exploration and experimentation of its mobile phone screens. Along the process, the company has gathered a plethora of experience and patents. In fact, in developing the OPPO X 2021 rollable display prototype, OPPO has applied for 122 patents, wherein 12 relate to the rollable mechanism.
