Qualcomm has officially unveiled its latest premium mid-range chip, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4—positioned as a more affordable alternative to the high-end Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Built on TSMC’s N4P 4nm process, the new chip skips Qualcomm’s custom Oryon cores found in the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite, instead using the older Kryo CPU architecture.

  • 1x Cortex-X4 prime core clocked at 3.2GHz
  • 3x Cortex-A720 cores at 3.0GHz
  • 2x Cortex-A720 cores at 2.8GHz
  • 2x Cortex-A720 cores at 2.0GHz

Qualcomm claims this configuration delivers a 31% performance boost over last year’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, while reducing power consumption by 39%. The new Adreno 825 GPU is also 49% faster, while AI tasks have seen a 44% performance increase.

The updated Hexagon NPU offers a 44% performance increase over the previous model. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 also includes an 18-bit triple image signal processor (ISP), which supports up to 320MP camera sensors and 4K60fps HDR video recording.

For gamers, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 supports new features like the Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0, which uses AI to double a game’s frame rate by generating extra frames, similar to NVIDIA’s DLSS technology.

On the camera front, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4’s Spectra 18-bit ISP offers real-time skin tone correction and can handle one 320 MP camera or up to three 36 MP cameras. Video recording is supported up to 4K at 60 fps, with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ options available.

Connectivity-wise, the chip comes with the Snapdragon X75 5G modem with peak download speeds of 4.2Gbps, but it only supports sub-6GHz spectrum, not the faster mmWave bands.

Other features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, UFS 4.0 storage, LPDDR5X RAM, and USB 3.1 Gen 2 support.

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will debut in the iQOO Z10 Turbo later this month, with additional devices from Xiaomi, OPPO, Meizu, and others expected to launch soon.
