Canon EOS R1 flagship mirrorless camera is in the works; aims for 2024 release

Canon finally confirms development of the EOS R1 — the company’s first true flagship full-frame mirrorless camera for the EOS R system.

The R1 is all about high-level performance. It will boast a brand-new image processing system that combines the existing DIGIC X processor with a mysterious new addition: the DIGIC Accelerator.

Together, these processors and a new, unnamed CMOS sensor promise to churn through massive amounts of data at high speeds, delivering “never-before-seen advancements” in autofocus (AF) and other functions.

They’re leveraging deep learning tech (in other words, AI) to achieve high-speed, high-accuracy subject recognition.

Imagine tracking athletes during a crowded play – the EOS R1 will supposedly lock onto your chosen player even if another athlete runs right in front. There’s also an “Action Priority” AF mode that analyzes subject movement and anticipates key moments.

Deep learning also enhances image quality. Canon is integrating their existing image noise reduction tech into the camera for cleaner, sharper photos.

The R1 is currently in the works, but Canon is targeting a 2024 release.
