Discord rolls out new safety measures with ID-Based age verification

Listen to article

Discord has announced a new set of enhanced teen safety features that will roll out globally beginning in early March.

Discord has announced a global rollout of new teen safety features starting March.

All new and existing users will now have a teen-appropriate experience by default with stricter content filters, limited access to age-restricted servers and direct messages from unknown users placed in a separate inbox.

Users may be required to verify their age by submitting a valid government ID or using facial age estimation through Discord’s verification partners.

Discord emphasizes that its ID-based age verification is privacy-focused. Submitted identity documents are deleted quickly. They are then often immediately after age confirmation.

A user’s verification status is not visible to others. In some cases, users may be asked to complete more than one verification method to confirm their age group.

The update builds on similar safety measures previously launched in the UK and Australia and is part of Discord’s broader effort to improve online safety for teens worldwide.
