Garmin updated their flagship Fenix smartwatches with the latest 7 series. The Fenix 7 comes in three sizes: the 42mm Fenix 7S, 47mm Fenix 7, and 51mm Fenix 7X. The Fenix 7S and 7 will be made out of fiber-reinforced polymer, and a Sapphire Solar Editions upgrade with a titanium and sapphire display. Though all three models will have a Solar and Sapphire Solare Edition as well.
Garmin adds solar charging capabilities to all three sizes. Garmin claims that compared to the previous generation Fenix 6X Pro, the current generation has 54 percent more solar surface area which translates to longer battery life. This effortlessly gives the 7S a max battery capacity of 90 hours with GPS enabled, and 162 hours with solar charging. While for the 7X, Garmin claims a 213-hour battery life and 578 hours with solar. Of course, these will depend on how heavy the use is and will change from a case-to-case basis.
The Garmin Fenix 7 watches support major satellite systems but also add the L5 frequency range for better accuracy in more challenging GPS environments. The L5 is a modernized GPS signal for civilians that give a higher power, greater bandwidth, and advanced signal design. Moreover, despite the addition of the touchscreen capabilities, Garmin didn’t get rid of the button controls offering multiple ways of navigation through menus.
In terms of software, Garmin adds a Real-Time Stamina tool to assist in comparing potential stamina. They’ve also added a mapping feature called Up Ahead giving users the location of aid stations, elevation climbs, water, and other points of interest depending on their course.
