Globe is set to announce that they will be offering Starlink’s Direct to Cell service in the Philippines. Starlink’s Direct to Cell is a satellite-based mobile service that lets ordinary LTE phones connect directly to Starlink satellites, so you get coverage in places with no cell towers.
As the first mobile operator in the Philippines to market Starlink’s Direct to Cell (DTC) service, Globe is leveraging space-based technology to reach the most geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas of our archipelago.
Starlink has over 650+ satellites in order, each one acts like a floating 4G/LTE cell tower in space (it has an eNodeB modem onboard). The goal is to provide texting, voice, data, and IoT connectivity in remote “dead zones” on land and coastal waters.

It uses standard LTE bands and protocols, so supported phones connect as if they were roaming onto another carrier’s network. The phone talks directly to the satellite; the satellite then backhauls traffic via laser links to the ground and into partner mobile networks.
No special satellite phone or Starlink dish is required; it is designed for regular LTE smartphones and some LTE IoT modems.
More details about this DTC service once we get them from Globe tomorrow.
