Listen to article

Huawei’s homegrown operating system, HarmonyOS, has made significant strides in the Chinese market, and has achieved a 15% market share in Q3 2024.

This unexpected surge fueled by the recent launch of HarmonyOS NEXT, poses a challenge to both Apple and Google.

According to a new report from TechInsights, the 15% market share represents a substantial increase from the previous quarter (at 13%), primarily at the expense of Android.

While Apple’s iOS maintained a steady 15% share, Android’s dominance dipped to 70% (from 72%) in the same period last year.

The success of HarmonyOS can be attributed to the launch of HarmonyOS NEXT, which offers a range of advanced features and improved performance. By relying on self-developed components, Huawei has effectively reduced its dependence on Android and its ecosystem.

Beyond these advancements, a growing number of Chinese consumers and businesses are opting for domestic alternatives, particularly in the face of geopolitical tensions. Apparently, this also contributes to the growth of Huawei’s software.

Additionally, our previous report mentioned that tens of thousands of apps are now readily developed for HarmonyOS NEXT. This would drive the adoption process more convenient especially for those trying to transition from Android or iOS to HarmonyOS.
