OpenAI has launched an upgraded version of its image-generation and editing tool, now branded as ChatGPT Images, as it steps up competition with Google’s popular Nano Banana image editor. The update introduces GPT Image 1.5, which OpenAI describes as its new flagship image model, available immediately within ChatGPT and through the company’s API.

According to OpenAI, the new model delivers faster image generation up to four times quicker than before, while offering more precise edits and improved consistency across outputs. The company says the upgrade is aimed at users who want more reliable image creation, whether starting from scratch or modifying existing photos.
Alongside the model update, OpenAI has added a dedicated Images tab inside the ChatGPT app and web interface. The new section serves both as a workspace for generating images and a discovery feed designed to inspire creative ideas and experimentation.
While OpenAI positions the update as a major refinement rather than a complete overhaul, early benchmarks show strong performance. GPT Image 1.5 quickly climbed to the top spot on the LMArena Text-to-Image leaderboard, overtaking Google’s Nano Banana Pro. However, early real-world comparisons suggest results can still vary depending on the task, with some users noting comparable or slightly better outcomes from Google’s tool in certain scenarios.
The new ChatGPT Images feature is rolling out globally and should be accessible to users immediately, although free-tier access remains limited. Developers can also integrate GPT Image 1.5 via the OpenAI API, with pricing details available on OpenAI’s website.
