Samsung unveils new 200MP ISOCELL HP5 sensor

Listen to article

Samsung has announced the ISOCELL HP5, a new 200MP camera sensor and the first in the world to feature ultra-small 0.5µm pixels. Unlike its larger 200MP siblings, the HP5 comes in a 1/1.56-inch format, making it ideal for telephoto and periscope cameras rather than being a main sensor on flagship phones.

Naturally, smaller pixels capture less light and could mean more noise in low-light shots. To address this, Samsung has introduced new tech like Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) and dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG), which help each pixel store more electrons for better sensitivity. It also uses a DTI Center Cut (DCC) design that reduces random noise and improves autofocus accuracy.

The sensor also brings upgraded optics, including High Precision Microlens, High Transmittance ARL, and High Sensitivity DTI, all designed to maximize light absorption and boost color accuracy. On top of that, end-to-end AI Remosaic processing allows the HP5 to capture and process full 200MP images in under two seconds.

Another highlight is its 13-bit color depth, offering over 550 billion color combinations, alongside Smart ISO Pro and Staggered HDR for better dynamic range. For versatility, the HP5 supports 2x in-sensor zoom on wide-angle lenses and up to 6x lossless zoom when paired with a 3x telephoto.

In terms of shooting, it can handle 200MP photos at 7.5 fps, 50MP at 30 fps, and 12.5MP at 90 fps. Video capture goes up to 8K at 30fps, 4K at 120fps, and FHD at 480fps. Like other Samsung sensors, Tetrapixel binning is on board, combining tiny pixels for better results in low light.

Samsung says the ISOCELL HP5 is now in mass production, so we can expect to see it debut in upcoming smartphones soon, most likely in high-end telephoto systems before trickling down to more affordable devices.
