Smart peaks 14Gbps in new 5G speed test

Listen to article

PLDT’s Smart Communications has announced that it has reached faster peak speeds in recent tests conducted in its 5G laboratory.

Done in partnership with Huawei, the company has posted a peak of 14 Gigabits per second (Gbps) of internet speed over next-generation 5G internet connection. This is also in preparation for the telecommunication company’s 5G rollout scheduled in the next few years.

“The coming of 5G opens up many opportunities to offer a wider selection of relevant services and solutions to our customers,” said Eric R. Alberto, PLDT and Smart Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer. “Now that global standards have already been approved, we are already investing in future-proofing our network and making sure that our network is ready for 5G.”

Just a few weeks ago, the company had posted 6.5Gbps in the same time they launched their 5G Technolab for research and testing on the next-generation internet connection. 5G, according to PLDT, opens up new possibilities for the network including low-latency connections. This is said to open up more opportunities for Filipinos including use for Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Cities.

Reaching high results in a small speed test is one thing. Now the challenge is to get this available for a broader range of users.

Of course, they do.

Nothing is impossible in their dream-world-make-believe-all-is-well reality.

Smart’s service and pricing are actually better than a lot of countries. 2GB + unli text for 99 pesos is a really good value.

Certainly promising. Of course 14 Gbps in a lab doesn’t mean it’ll be anywhere near in real-life usage. Hopefully our telcos can come up with good and sufficient placement of cellsites and other infra so when 5G becomes commercially available it can also be readily available in real life usage.
