Sony PlayStation 5 Pro reportedly launches later this year

A mere month after the PlayStation 5 Slim officially entered the Philippine market, rumors of a powerhouse Sony PlayStation 5 Pro are already swirling on the horizon. This upcoming console boasts a more powerful GPU with three times faster ray-tracing capabilities than the base PS5, promising a significant leap in performance.

Insider Gaming confirms the accuracy of leaked specs that surfaced from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, despite the channel’s hit-or-miss track record.

Screenshots from the technical documentation (codenamed “Trinity”), believed to originate from PlayStation’s developer portal reveal these specs:

  • Rendering 45% faster than PS5
  • 2-3x ray-tracing (4x in some cases)
  • 33.5 Teraflops
  • PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling) upscaling/antialiasing solution
  • Support for resolutions up to 8K is planned for future SDK version
  • Custom machine learning architecture
  • AI Accelerator, supporting 300 TOPS of 8-bit computation / 67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point

The leaked documents hint at a massive jump in processing power, with 67 teraflops (TFLOPS) of 16-bit floating-point calculations, translating to roughly 33.5 TFLOPS for single-precision computing. This translates to a significant performance boost compared to the base PS5’s 10.28 TFLOPS.

Gamers can expect a major leap in ray tracing performance, potentially tripling the base PS5’s capabilities, with reports suggesting even a 4x improvement in some cases.

The documents also mention mentioned PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a rumored tech leveraging PlayStation’s machine learning for image upscaling, similar to existing solutions like NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR. This could enable the PS5 Pro hardware to support up to 8K resolution and further enhance ray tracing performance.

PlayStation 5 Pro release window

Insider Gaming further claims that the PS5 Pro is tentatively slated for a 2024 holiday release. Although, this release window is still subject change depending on development progress.

Notably, Sony’s first-party studios have been testing the PS5 Pro devkits since September, with third-party developers gaining access in January. This accelerated development cycle suggests a potential earlier launch, but the lack of first-party titles for the PS5 this year might influence the final release date.
