According to the data gathered by Spotify for Summer 2020, the number of listeners worldwide has increased by 40 percent. The research was conducted globally from April 17 to May 17, 2020.
With users who have created more than 940,000 cleaning playlists, TLC’s No Scrubs has been the most popular track for cleaning worldwide. In the Philippines, among the songs which belong to cleaning-themed playlists were Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off, Miley Cyrus’ Party in the USA, Ariana Grande’s thank u, next, Dua Lipa’s IDGAF, and Walk the Moon’s Shut Up and Dance.
Apart from streaming music, Spotify users were also seen listening to various genres of podcasts. One of the most streamed podcasts was about arts and crafts such as Just Wanna Quilt and WeCrochet which increased by 125% and more than 60% increase, respectively.
About 50% increase in the creation of playlists were related to hair maintenance. This was determined by looking at the keywords like “haircut”, “dyeing hair”, and “hair dye” in the playlist titles. Some music from these playlists include Complicated by Avril Lavigne, Sugar, We’re Goin Down by Fall Out Boy, The Middle By Jimmy Eat World, High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco, Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots, and Hair Cutter by Animal Collective.
More than a 1,000% increase was found in homeschool-themed playlists. Popular tracks added to these playlists include Supalonely by BENEE and Gus Dapperton, Sucker by Jonas Brothers, Circles by Post Malone, and Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa. There’s also a significant rise in Animal Crossing: New Horizons-inspire playlists. Meanwhile, work-from-home playlists catapulted to 1,400%. Songs listed were Work From Home by Fifth Harmony (feat. Ty Dolla $ign), 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton, Blinding Lights by The Weekend, Light On by Maggie Rogers, 10,000 hours by Dan + Sha (with Justin Bieber), Boss Bitch by Doja Cat, Delicate by Taylor Swift, and The Less I Know the Better by Tame Impala. Beethoven’s Für Elise was also a top pick for the playlist.
Spotify’s Cleaning Kit playlist has risen by 30% in streaming. Popular song choices for cleaning globally include Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson, Roar by Katy Perry, Toxic by Britney Spears, Mr. Brightside by The Killers, and Work by Drake and Rihanna.
And as the weather warms up in other parts of the globe, listeners were starting to create summer-themed playlists which have increased by about 245%.
