SSS increases contribution rate to 15% starting January 2025

The long-planned increase in contributions to the Social Security System (SSS) has officially kicked in, with rates increased to 15% since January 1st, 2025.

As of this month, the new contribution split means employers will contribute 10%, while employees will pay 5%. This increase is a key milestone on the path to the full 15% contribution rate, which is expected to remain in place moving forward.

This change is part of the provisions laid out under Republic Act No. 11199, or the Social Security Act of 2018 23. The law mandates a gradual increase in contributions, with a 1% hike every two years, starting from 12% in 2019.

However, Rep. Arlene Brosas criticized the increase as a “cruel New Year’s gift” to workers, adding that instead of higher wages, they face more deductions.

The SSS defends the contribution hike, saying it strengthens the system and ensures better benefits and long-term financial security.
