The Sony PS5 price just jumped to PHP 40K this month

Listen to article

Yes, you heard that right. The Sony PlayStation 5, arguably in the latter stages of its product life cycle, has had its price bumped up to PHP 40K. PHP 40,032, to be exact.

Sony’s official announcement determines these price increases were a “necessary step to ensure [the continued delivery] of innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.” There is a general consensus that this hike is caused by the rapidly increasing cost of memory, as it becomes a high-value asset for AI data centers.

The price of the beloved PlayStation 5 has followed a V-curve. When it launched during the pandemic, stock shortages saw people paying money in the PHP 40Ks for the console and bundled games. As time passed and supply eased, retail prices dropped to as low as PHP 23,990 for the digital and PHP 27,990 for the disc versions. It took around 3 years to get to that point though.

Shockingly, prices have rebounded back to record highs once again. Before this jump, it was at PHP 30,790 – so a near PHP 10K leap. This comes at a time when many are also looking to get Sony PlayStation 5 consoles due to the imminent release of much-awaited titles, such as Grand Theft Auto VI.

However, unlike the previous PlayStation 3 that lasted for 7 years (2006-2013) before the 4 came out, it seems like Sony isn’t planning to release the PS6 by next year. There is speculation that the PlayStation 5 may experience 9-10 years of life before the next generation, so the PS5 is still a stellar pickup for gamers out there.

The PlayStation SEA site did not list any increases for the PS5 Pro in the Philippines, but we’ll keep our eyes posted for any announcements as well.
