X has launched Chat, a new and more private version of Direct Messages. Chat lets users talk in one-on-one or group conversations with end-to-end encryption, meaning only the sender and receiver can read the messages. It also supports file sharing, voice and video calls, and will soon bring back voice memos.

Users can edit or delete messages, set them to disappear, get alerts when someone takes a screenshot, and even block screenshots in some cases. When Chat is set up, the app creates special encryption keys protected by a PIN stored only on the user’s device.
All messages and files stay encrypted on X’s servers until unlocked by the receiver. To use encrypted DMs, users must be on the latest X app and connected with the person they’re messaging. While Android support is coming soon, Chat is now available on iOS and Web.
