RedFox WizPad Windows 7 Tablet out in stores

Listen to article

RedFox Technologies announced over the week-end the availability of its long-overdue tablet PC — the RedFox WizPad. First mentioned back in July, the WizPad is a 10-inch tablet running an Intel Atom CPU and Windows 7.

We got to check out one at an SM Appliance Store yesterday to see it first-hand and to get the suggested retail price.

RedFox WizPad
10″ capacitive display screen @ 1024×600 pixels
Intel Atom N455 1.6GHz
Intel GMA 3150
1GB DDR3 RAM
16GB SSD
WiFi 802.11 b/g
2 USB 2.0 ports
SD card slot

There’s a G-sensor that allows you to flip the screen 360-degrees and auto-orients the display accordingly, much like the iPad.

Though there is an open slot for a 3G SIM card, it does not have a modem installed. The sales rep says, it’s optional and can be upgraded at point of sale. Claimed battery life is around 6 hours.

RedFox also promises larger capacity models like a 32GB SSD storage and 2GB DDR3 RAM in future releases. RedFox mentioned before that this is gonna be a multi-OS tablet which is technically true considering it’s got the guts of your typical netbook. You can probably easily install Meego or Ubuntu in here via the USB port (or maybe even Android).

This particular model comes pre-installed with Windows 7 and has a hefty price tag of Php31,999.

Expensive. In dollars @ 43 per dollar this device cost 744 US dollars!!!!!

If this were Microsoft, HP, Dell, Fujitsu, Sony Vaio, maybe the price is justifiable. But Red Fox?

Highway robbery.

Dumb toy like the ipad. Only rich mindless zombies would buy such devices while sitting in Starbucks.

imo average price of atom based n450 netbooks now cost around 13k to 17k

– keyboard
+ touchscreen

doesn’t justify the 32k price xD

better save your money on a different model :)

announcement just got out, asus will be releasing 7, 9, 10, 12 inch tablets. This is going to be fun and exciting, especially that asus was a game changer when they released the netbook.

@Yuga – I guess there’s not many choices as to getting a tablet that runs Windows OS. A Php29k Windows tablet with a netbook’s specs is still highly priced for me… Will have to wait till next year. Maybe prices will start to go down by that time…

This is very disappointing. The price is as similar to an iPad. I was hoping it would be cheaper at around Php20,000. I was wrong. Man. It was truly heartbreaking especially that an iPed costs only Php4,000.

This is an epic fail in the part of Redfox. How in the world can they compete with the iPad if they have the same pricing? If I’m shelling out P31k, I’m going for the iPad.

I just hope that they reconsider the pricing because it is not competitive with the iPad. Or better yet, buy a netbook. You’ll get better specs for less the price.

@Pusang Kulog – the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t touchscreen tablet netbook sells for about 29k. Same specs as this one.

@phonesnatcher and igoydude – You guys are exactly right… So why does a tablet like the WizPad be priced like a full blown PC when its specs are way below in comparison to that of a full blown PC?

Should be 15k. Repeatedly released overpriced tablets and netbooks have skewed our thinking regarding prices.

Reply

igoydude · 16 years ago

yea, why would people compare a tablet to a full blown pc, portability and size will always be a factor that limits the processing power of such gadgets, unless it’s priced sky high that only the filthy rich can afford, imho.

people expect a tablet that runs like a super personal computer and operates like smartphone. plus a video call and txting functions. whatever a tablet appears the people will then criticize it simply because its lack of something.

it just a tablet dudes, -whatever the blah blah blah configuration they might have, ok! (same purpose, same – finger touching device… you cannot compare this to blah blah blah and so on…

take this:

-Finally, someone with the brains to realize that this device is not a direct competitor of the Superion nor Archos (android). –

-Android or iOS or Win 7 pa ang OS tablet pa rin ito. this device is still a direct competition to the tablet market. dumb ass

-if that’s the case, why not just buy a desktop PC or a a laptop that’s gaming capable? For the same price, you could get an MSI EX460 laptop with a 512 Mb ATI Radeon Mobility 4330 graphics chipset.

-Haha but in the end really I don’t support all those segmentation, it’s just these companies trying to get you to buy all these stuff because you ‘need’ them for a ‘certain’ type of activity. Just give me one device with everything on it and my world becomes simpler.

how would you define tablet? for me its just a machine!:D

given:
Touch Sensitive Tablet = Machine

[an idiot definition] A machine is anything that reduces human effort; anything that simplifies work, or saves time, is a machine

[boring geek definition] machines are any combination of bodies so connected that thier relative motions are constraint. And by which means force and motion maybe transmitted and modified as the screw in its nut or a lever range turnabout a fulcrum or a pulley by its pivot etc. esp a construction more or less complex consisting of a combination of moving parts or simple mechanical elements as wheels, levers, cams etc”

@manibela – A netbook with the RedFox WizPad’s specs would cost around 15k to 18k. The only difference would be the SSD storage and the touch screen feature. So tell me, is the 13k difference between the two justifiable considering that both will probably render the same scope of productivity for their users.

I even doubt it if Windows 7 will perform good in this tablet. A Windows XP Tablet Edition would have been a better choice…

To those who say that they’ll be able to play Diablo 2 and other old games in this unit, may I remind you that a tablet pc is for an all day mobile use. Playing games that will suck up the battery life of a tablet pc defeats its primary purpose. Or are you planning to use this thing only in your room with the the power outlet nearby? If that’s the case, why not just buy a desktop PC or a a laptop that’s gaming capable? For the same price, you could get an MSI EX460 laptop with a 512 Mb ATI Radeon Mobility 4330 graphics chipset.

So I say again, for its specs and its productivity capabilities, the RedFox WizTab is still badly price…

I absolutely agree with you. And often too, I post my opinion around here. I just don’t get it why @Jay called you a dumb ass. I think it was totally uncalled for.

Well that’s just me making an opinion, and this is me making an opinion again.

I just think that just like many believe that the netbook is not a direct competition to a laptop, and the dumb mobile phone is not a direct competition to the smart mobile phone, the Tablet has it’s own segmentation (however immature it is). There are tablets that will be more configurable than the others (as Yuga pointed out, this has the guts of a netbook, in the body of a tablet). If the other tablets in the market are as configurable as this one, then they become direct competitions.

If you include a bluetooth keyboard with this, does it finally compete in the netbook segment? And as I said, does it really become a ‘direct’ competition to an archos 101 just because it can sport an android OS? Sometimes it’s not even hardware…

If you include a keyboard with the ipad… well you get the point…

Haha but in the end really I don’t support all those segmentation, it’s just these companies trying to get you to buy all these stuff because you ‘need’ them for a ‘certain’ type of activity. Just give me one device with everything on it and my world becomes simpler.

Just my two Filipino cents…

One direct competitor would be the HP Slate 500

although, it’s not available yet.

@manibela

and what device would you rather place your comparison of the RedFox Wizpad? Lenovo S10-3 T? That is a netbook and this is positioned in the market as a Tablet device. Android or iOS or Win 7 pa ang OS tablet pa rin ito. this device is still a direct competition to the tablet market. dumb ass

@manibela,

After reading through all the coments, I appreciate reading yours. Finally, someone with the brains to realize that this device is not a direct competitor of the Superion nor Archos (android). Moreso, you have mentioned that unlike the other two tablets, that the Wizpad has a full-pledged OS (Windows 7) which could run apps and games we have been accustomed to.

I just wish people read, do research and make intelligent remarks around here. tsk…

Reply

manibela · 16 years ago

I wouldn’t compare this to an archos or a superion (or even maybe an ipad). If it has a configuration with android, then that’s a direct competition (but even then I don’t know if the atom processor trumps the others.) I don’t know if you can install a full featured OS in the superion or archos. With this one, you can probably install an early 2000 PC game like diablo 2 maybe, comparing it to my EEE pc.

If it’s a Windows 7 in at least the basic flavor then the pricing is quite justifiable. A regular 10″ netbook with windows 7 starter could easily go for 24k and it’d be ok.

Essentially a netbook sans keyboard and crappy hdd ? The price is quite excessive though.

Would be better if they just allocated an internal compartment where you can plug a USB drive or two loaded with an OS reducing the cost.

Also IIRC Windows 7 requires around 15gb of disk space which is extremely constricting with that 16gb SSD. Would be better with a customized GNU/Linux OS installed to save space (requires around 3.5gb~6gb for decent operation leaving the rest for /home)

The lack of modem is another deal breaker.

“Though there is an open slot for a 3G SIM card, it does not have a modem installed. The sales rep says, it’s optional and can be upgraded at point of sale.”

This means SM appliance store can install the modem? so this would be an additional cost probably 2-3k more? how is the claimed battery life?

another DOA tablet?
