Microsoft Edge to adopt Chromium, coming to other platforms

Microsoft has announced that its intent to adopt the Chromium open source project for the development of the Microsoft Edge browser on desktop and plan to roll it out to other Windows versions and macOS.

Microsoft is adopting Chromium in an effort to improve Microsoft Edge’s compatibility with all websites while getting the best possible battery life and hardware integration on all kinds of Windows devices. Most of the changes will happen under the hood.

Web developers will also benefit as they will have a less-fragmented web platform to test their sites. Corporate IT will have improved compatibility for both old and new web apps in the browser that comes with Windows.

In addition to the improvements, Microsoft Edge will also be delivered and updated for all supported versions of Windows as well as other platforms like macOS. Before the shift to Chromium, Microsoft Edge is exclusive to Windows 10.
