The folks over at test.de have conducted an extensive drop test to measure the durability of smartphones and the S8 didn't do too well. The German company made a contraption that drops phones from around 80 centimeters in height. The drop is done over and over and most phones survive after 100 falls with light dents and minor scratches. Based on the test, they concluded that it is advisable to use a phone case. It will hide the attractive curves of the handset but will protect it from unwanted drops. The display is also reinforced with Corning's Gorilla Glass 4 which should offer better protection than commonly-used displays, but what happens when you subject it to a drop test? A user in China did this test on a functioning S6 Edge. She repeatedly smashed (not just dropped) the phone on the floor and it still worked fine afterwards with no visible cracks.
