Nikon announces on Monday (October 31) that it will be closing its compact camera factory in eastern Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, which employed nearly 2,300 people. In a statement from Nikon, they stated that in recent years, due to the rise of smartphones, the compact digital camera market has been shrinking rapidly, leading to a significant decrease in operating rate at NIC (Nikon Imaging China) and creating a difficult business environment. Nikon is now planning to focus more on producing high-end cameras such as DLSRs and full-frame mirrorless cameras. Canon may be preparing to enter the pocket gimbal camera segment, based on a newly published patent that outlines a compact, stabilized handheld device aimed at content creators. The patent describes a compact camera with an integrated three-axis gimbal, a fixed lens, and a built-in screen housed within a handheld grip. DJI recently updated its Osmo Pocket lineup, while other brands are also exploring compact, creator-focused camera systems. The Nikon ZR is now official as their first cinema camera developed in partnership with RED. The model combines Nikon’s autofocus and in-body stabilization with RED’s color science and video codecs, positioning it against cameras like the Canon C50 and Sony FX3 at a lower price point.
