Nikon announces on Monday (October 31) that it will be closing its compact camera factory in eastern Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, which employed nearly 2,300 people. In a statement from Nikon, they stated that in recent years, due to the rise of smartphones, the compact digital camera market has been shrinking rapidly, leading to a significant decrease in operating rate at NIC (Nikon Imaging China) and creating a difficult business environment. Nikon is now planning to focus more on producing high-end cameras such as DLSRs and full-frame mirrorless cameras. Canon may be preparing to enter the pocket gimbal camera segment, based on a newly published patent that outlines a compact, stabilized handheld device aimed at content creators. The patent describes a compact camera with an integrated three-axis gimbal, a fixed lens, and a built-in screen housed within a handheld grip. DJI recently updated its Osmo Pocket lineup, while other brands are also exploring compact, creator-focused camera systems. Nikon has just announced the new Coolpix P90 with a maximum optical zoom of 24x, one of the highest I've seen so far in compact cameras. Nikon did not mention how much this camera will cost once it's available to the public.
