OpenAI has announced the GPT-5.6 series. GPT-5.6 Sol is the flagship model and comes with OpenAI's strongest AI safety protections yet according to the brand. GPT-5.6 Terra is designed for everyday tasks and delivers performance similar to GPT-5.5 while costing half as much. OpenAI also introduced a new naming system where the version number represents the model generation while Sol, Terra and Luna identify different performance tiers. The GPT-5.6 models are currently available through a limited preview for selected partners. OpenAI plans to expand access to ChatGPT, the API and Codex in the coming weeks. OpenAI is reportedly developing a “superapp” that will combine ChatGPT, Codex, and its upcoming browser into a single platform. The move aims to simplify OpenAI’s growing ecosystem of apps, which has become increasingly fragmented as the company expanded into multiple AI services.
