OpenAI begins ad testing on ChatGPT

Listen to article

OpenAI has started testing ads in ChatGPT for logged-in adult users in the U.S. that is limited to the Free and Go subscription tiers.

There will now be ads in ChatGPT. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will not see ads.

According to OpenAI, ads will not affect ChatGPT’s answers and conversations will remain private from advertisers.

Sponsored content will be clearly labeled and shown separately from AI-generated responses. Advertisers will only receive aggregated performance data such as views and clicks but they cannot access user chats or personal details.

Ads will not appear for users under 18 or alongside sensitive topics like health, mental health or politics. Users can manage ad preferences, hide ads, delete ad data and control personalization through in-app settings.

OpenAI says the test is aimed at funding broader access to ChatGPT features while gathering feedback before any wider rollout.
