On Tuesday, the Finnish telecom company, Nokia sued Amazon and HP of several patent infringements over video-related technologies. Nokia owns about 20,000 patent families—some of which the e-commerce giant and the computer-maker are allegedly using for free. Cases have been filed against Amazon in the US, Germany, India, the UK, and the European Unified Patent Court. As reported by Reuters, the lawsuit says Amazon and HP refused to take licenses to the patents enabling more efficient high-quality video streaming with lower bandwidth and data-storage requirements, and used Nokia’s technology, nonetheless. Microsoft Corporation and Canon Inc., two giants on their own respective fields, have recently signed an agreement that grants the two parties the right to use each other’s patents. The recent collaborative agreement between Canon and Microsoft was not the first time instance that the two firms sat down and discussed patent matters. Well, after Apple has been granted these patents just recently, seeing them in the future is a big possibility. The patent indicates that the embedded volume control (406 on the image) could be seen anytime and could be adjusted by first holding a finger on it.
