Is Sun Cellular now riding on Smart’s network?

Listen to article

I know this would not be a huge surprise since Sun Cellular is already a member of the PLDT Group but just saw a couple of days ago that Sun Cellular has upgraded its network’s signal strength. It might have seem routinary but the instructions were a bit telling — select “Smart” in the network settings.

The instructions were stated like so (primarily in Tagalog).

1. Pumunta sa PHONE SETTINGS.
2. Pumunta sa NETWORK SELECTION or OPERATOR SELECTION.

The instructions were pretty interesting and gives us a hint that Sun Cellular is already riding on Smart’s network.

Has anyone tried this in their area and made it to work? Perhaps those who didn’t have good signal from Sun Cellular before.

I have a Sun postpaid plan and 3G works perfectly in Cebu. But when we went to Puerto Princesa last month, wala atang signal ang Sun Cellular kasi No Service ang nakalagay sa phone ko. Tried following the instructions indicated above at naging SMART 3G signal ko in Puerto Princesa. When we got back in Cebu, naging SUN 3G na uli. Ayaw na gumana if I choose Smart. I think this only works in areas na walang signal ang Sun o kaya super hina.

Doesn’t work in Makati and Parañaque though. After searching for Networks and Smart is selected, it says “Unable to connect to network at this time. Please try again later.”

I’m from Trento, Agusan del Sur, just tried a while ago and was successful. I’m very happy now because since last August 2011 could not use my SUN number. My screen displayed SMART GOLD, but no problem for me as long as I can use my SUN number with cheaper rate abroad. It’s really good news, thanks.

I think it’s fine, with the current network modernization of Smart, they can accommodate much more subscriber now. I think it’s fair for all. AMEN?

Hopefully, hindi naman lugi ang smart subscribers nito sa network congestion, and sun cellular cellsites should also be utilized by Smart subscribers.

@chinitoguy, that’s how unfair Globe and Ayala is para sa atin. Now we know!

This is good news! I hope Smart can also ride on Sun’s network. Why? Sun has installed cellsites on Ayala Land-controlled malls and residential areas. Ayala Land is the sister company of PLDT’s nemesis Globe Telecom. For those who are not aware, Smart has weak and sometimes no signal at Ayala Malls and Ayala Land projects like Glorietta, Greenbelt, Trinoma, Serendra, etc.

Here in Dasma Cavite, I’m using Nokia C2-02 dual-sim… Sun’s signal is alot stronger than Smart.

So, no need to ride on Smart’s signal…
Sun can ride on its own signal strength.

I have a friend from Butuan City. It’s located in Northern Mindanao. He told me about this yesterday and according to him, he can use his sun sim but gets signal from smart by changing the settings as stated above.

Yes, he can call using his sun sim and with better coverage. Instead of
“SUN” written on top of his screen, it is changed to “SMART”, still fully functional. Hmmmm. What does this mean?

yes actually, MVP’s PLDT acquired a majority share of Digital Telecom(in which digitel and sun is under) now his Smart network runs Sun Cell.
