SmartSens has introduced a new flagship-grade smartphone camera sensor, aiming to push mobile photography and videography further with improved dynamic range, low-light performance, and high-frame-rate video.

The new sensor, called the SC5A6XS, features a 1-inch optical format with 50MP resolution, positioning it among the largest sensors designed for smartphones. It is built on a 22nm stacked architecture and integrates SmartSens’ updated HDR 3.0 technology.

With a claimed 115dB dynamic range, the sensor is designed to capture more detail in both bright and dark areas of a scene. Its HDR system uses multi-frame fusion within a single exposure, helping reduce motion artifacts and improve clarity, especially in video recording.

On the video side, the SC5A6XS supports 4K recording at up to 120fps, along with 4K at 60fps with HDR enabled, making it suitable for advanced mobile video use.

For low-light performance, the sensor uses 1.6μm pixels combined with SmartSens’ SFCPixel technology, which enhances light sensitivity and reduces noise. This should result in cleaner images with less grain in dim environments.

Autofocus is handled through a hybrid system combining full-pixel AllPix ADAF and phase detection, allowing faster and more accurate focusing across different lighting conditions.

SmartSens also highlighted improved efficiency, with around 11% lower power consumption in HDR mode, which may help reduce heat during extended video recording sessions.

The SC5A6XS is currently in the sampling phase and is expected to enter mass production by the second quarter of 2026. It is likely to appear in upcoming flagship smartphones, with early adoption expected from major brands.
