5 things Filipinos should stop doing on social media in 2015

It’s the start of the New Year and a lot of us have posted our New Year’s Resolutions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Some of the resolutions I read on my timeline are for better health, career, finances, and relationships, but how about social media? If you haven’t thought of it yet, then you might want to read about the five things Filipinos should stop doing on social media in 2015.

  1. Inappropriate use of hashtags – In our 10 Wrong but Funny Ways Filipinos used #RubyPH article, we pointed out that hashtags, especially the official ones, are used “to stay updated with advisories from PAGASA as well as for the local media and government to monitor emergencies and people in need of rescuing.” Although Typhoon Ruby has long left the country we’re going to experience more typhoons this year which means more official hashtags. We hope that Filipinos would use hashtags more responsibly and avoid using them for selfish reasons. The same goes with #hashtag #bombing #the #heck #out #of #all #they #post #on #facebook #or #instagram #or #twitter.

  1. Sharing information online without verifying – A lot of Filipinos are still vulnerable to online hoaxes that spread like wildfire on social media channels like Facebook. Although we can reason that it’s becoming more and more difficult to filter through the junk and get the truth due to the massive amount of information you encounter on the Internet, we can still train our brains to spot these hoaxes or fake news to prevent its spread. If the news came from a site you’re not familiar with and is not reported by major news outlets, then do a little research. Verify before you share.

  1. Too much ranting – Personally, I’ve no problems with people ranting on social media since not all rants are senseless. There are rants concerning important issues that can challenge the mind and spark intelligent discussions or debates. Besides it’s their personal page and people can post whatever they want. I myself have posted what I consider now as useless rants on Facebook. It just becomes a problem when when useless ranting becomes too frequent. When faced with a problem, the habitual ranter would just take it out publicly on Facebook or Twitter instead of privately tackling the problem head on. In addition, the constant flow of negativity or drama would certainly cost you friends or followers.

  1. Using fake accounts / info – Social media sites like Facebook and Instagram are supposed to be for people or brands with real names or identities, however, there are still a lot who create fake accounts with fake info (e.g. Studied at Hogwarts, Working at Edi sa puso mo.) mostly for anonymity. While anonymity in itself is not the problem, these fake accounts are utilized so the real person behind it cannot be held accountable when they harshly comment, cyberbully, stalk a person, or promote “businesses” that promise easy money.

  1. Begging for Likes, RTs, and Follows – Almost everyone on social media has experienced or guilty of this. Seriously, people should stop begging or asking for Likes, RTs, and Follows since it makes you sound desperate. There are exceptions, of course, like when asking for Likes or RTs to support a valid cause (not the “For every Like or Share Facebook feeds 100 people in Africa” kind). But if you’re asking for it because you posted your OOTD (outfit of the day), a quote you copied from a popular movie, or ranted on someone, that’s a big no. The same goes for Follow Backs, asking for someone to follow you is like approaching a stranger and asking him/her to be your buddy. It’s better to receive real Follows from people because they like the content you publish.

Got something to add to this list? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. agree :)

  3. Pang games ko yung multi accts ko.

  4. An good addition to #4 is using sticky-shifted or jejemonized names as FB names (like Aq Si MasterEm).

Also, avoid making Facebook your personal autobiography. Tipong halos bawat galaw, bawat kain, bawat isuot, bawat lakad (kahit ‘yung mga senseless like “sige out na ako. punta lang SM.”), at bawat segundo sa buhay eh ilalahad na sa Facebook, complete with stolen photos and crazy captions and senseless hashtags. I’m not against sharing your life moments sa Facebook (or Twitter), pero sana ‘yung may sense and meaningful lang ang i-share.

    No offense intended.

Just don’t.

  7. People posting inspirational messages or similar (e.g. keep the faith) but using their selfie photos, hehe.

  8. Mark Zuckerbetg’s second best invention is the UNFOLLOW button. Use it indiscriminately.

  9. Mali, OA at abusong paggamit ng “Proud to be Pinoy”.

  10. Yung pag-like sa sarili post!

  11. Number 4. Studied at Hogwarts, Working at Edi sa puso mo.. Hahaha. Jejemons. XD

  15. You forgot #6: Telling others what NOT to do on Social Media. Who’s ego runs social media anyways, why’d they had to say you should have a netiquette? This is bullsh*t, walang basagan ng trip. Unfollow, unfriend, block – simple as that.

  17. True :)

  18. Yung pag-like sa mga nakaka-bobong ‘words of wisdom’ ni Marcelo Santos III. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAH.

  19. dito sa pilipinas may batas..kailangan nating sumunod lagi sa batas..
we are always ruled!kaya hindi lahat pwedeng gawin..siguro kaya ginawa ng social media is for you to have freedom..a freedom of expressions a freedom of speech…bakit tayong mga pinoy ang hilig pumuna..why dontwe just accept that there are things that out of our control..for me wala nmn cgurong problema kung ano gusto nilang ipost ihashtag or ect. sa mga accounts nila…ITS THEIR ACCOUNT NOT YOURS…if you dont want what they are posting it easy UNFRIEND them..you know there are solutions to that problem…the problem is ur not thinking of a solution ur making ANOTHER PROBLEM..social media is for everyone walang pumipigil sayo..YOU HAVE FREEDOM WHATEVER YOU WANT TO SHARE OR POST…

    just saying…

  20. what I really don’t like are those who post pictures of their DEAD family members and friends habang nasa lamay, open casket pa.

    I find it morbid

  22. yung nagpopost na ignore if you dont love God and etc.

  23. I CHALLENGE THE AUTHOR TO POST THE LIST ON HIS/HER FB TIMELIME. Put a screenshot, you can exclude your name.

  24. tama eh

  25. LoL!

  26. Ending your post with “respect post”. Do they really have to point that out. It’s just like you’re asking to be trolled.

    Respect post.

  27. @archie @isklamowsyon @Stef .

  29. kulang yong like kasama dapat ang type “AMEN”

  31. What about ‘proud to be pinoy’ in everything that is even the slightest pinoy related post, esp on the comment page. I mean seriously!!! I am proud to be pinoy but it can get annoying if u point that out everytime. You can be proud but in a more tasteful way. Hindi yung mukha tau begging for recognition all the time.

  32. Eh pano yung mga “Proud to be Filipino” na posts

  33. Its their page, they can post what they want. If you dont wanna see any of these, unfriend or unfollow. >.<
