Instagram is getting its own downvote button, but for comments

Listen to article

Instagram is testing a new dislike button aimed at giving users a way to downvote unwanted or irrelevant comments. This new feature is specifically being tested for comment sections on both Reels and Feed posts.

However, just like how YouTube does it, there won’t also be a dislike counter.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri has clarified that the dislikes will eventually factor into how comments are ranked. In this sense, it functions similarly to Reddit’s downvote button.

“This gives people a private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment,” Mosseri wrote on Threads, adding that the goal is to create a more “friendly” comment section environment on the platform.

The feature is still in the testing phase and pops up to a very small group of people, potentially going for a wider rollout in the future.

This move comes as Instagram has been pushing out new features recently. Including a video-editing app, Edits, reminiscent of TikTok’s CapCut, and the ability to post longer Reels, capped at three minutes.
