Apple iPhone finally announced

At the CES MacWorld just moments ago, Steve Jobs announced the highly speculated Apple iPhone. Looks like a sleekly iPod Nano with nothing but screen space:

iPhone

The feature that Jobs is claiming to solve the usability problem — no keypad. Just pure digital real estate. It’s currently only tied with Cingular though.

Apple iPhone

Some basic specs:

OSX operating system
3.5 inch wide screen
2 megapixel camera
bluetooth
WiFi
GSM Radio + EDGE
8GB capacity
proximity sensor (so your face won’t accidentally press the buttons)
switch from portrait to landscape screen layout
built-in speaker
run Safari browser

This thing is a little expensive — $499 for the 4GB and $599 for the 8GB. Expect the prices here in the Philippines will be more than that (somewhere around Php30k & Php40k respectively) if it will even reach the country when it ships this June.

One thing they forgot to mention was how long the battery life would be — standby time and call time.

will only be avalable in Asia in 2008.

  3. Anthony says:

…and by that time, more advanced phones will arrive. It would be better, if they made the resolution of the cam higher (i.e. 3.2 MP)…

  4. [...] Aside from the iPhone that’s getting a lot of raves at the CES today, the AppleTV isn’t gonna miss a beat as well. [...]

  5. Dave Starr says:

Thanks for digging that up, Anthony. As I expected no less power hungry than several of the Windows Mobile phones/PDA I would be interested in … if they would work for through even one business day … prediction? Another loser.

    @ Yuga: “sleeky”?

  6. [...] My opinion: The iPhone is not for Pinoys. [...]

  7. CES ? Do you mean at MacWorld ?

I agree with Anthony. I would buy it if the megapixel is higher than 2. I already have a Nano and a Canon Digicam, probably I will still buy it… temptation…. Now that I’m saving to buy the latest Apple Notebook, probably by 2008 it will be in a higher megapixel already, then that’s the time that I will buy the phone.

It’s cool, but it’s in its first generation. I see a lot of improvements in the future.

Also, 4-8 GIGS OF MEMORY ONLY?!

Of course, it’s 4-8 GB of flash and not a hard drive, which won’t fit the space, power requirements and maybe the price.

  11. kid says:

it looks promising. and since it will be available in asia by 2008, it’ll be more polished than the current offering when it does come here.

it’s not as expensive as you might think since it’s positioned to compete with the smartphones (blackberry, treo, windows mobile, se p990, etc.) and all-in-ones.

i wonder though which network they will partner with when it comes here.

  12. [...] They are blogging. I’m too late for this news. Anyway, this is iPhone and this is cool. Certainly, this phone will rock the Mac World. Take a good look of this phone and think, would I buy one or not? Or maybe two? This phone will ship in June but will be bundled with Cingular only. Apple iPhone Main Features [...]

iPhone is available with Cingular ONLY!? And what if I am stuck under contract with a carrier OTHER than Cingular but still want a iPhone?

Well, the only solution I could fine was http://www.Cellswapper.com – they get you out of any cell phone contract!

Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that’s frickin’ thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it’s close to your face

Would anyone know what frequency it uses? 900/1800/1900? Thanks!

Say you’ve downloaded Cars from iTunes. Instead of watching it on your computer, wirelessly sync the flick to Apple TV.Then pull up a seat, put up your feet, and play your movie on TV. Give yourself a hand: You’ve just changed theway you watch digital media.
