Nokia outs C5-03 touch phone on Symbian^1

Listen to article

And when we thought Nokia’s all out with their new Symbian^3 OS, they’ll surprise us with this Nokia C5-03 running on Symbian^1 with a resistive touch screen.

The Nokia C5-03 looks like a cross between the Nokia 5800 XM and the Nokia C6-01, only a cheaper and dumbed-down version.

Nokia C5-03 specs:
3.2″ resistive screen @ 360×640 pixels
ARM 11 600MHz processor
40MB storage
128MB RAM
HSDPA 10.2Mbps, HSUPA 2Mbps
Bluetooth 2.0
WiFi 802.11 b/g
5MP camera
FM Radio tuner
GPS w/ aGPS support
Li-Ion 1000mAh battery
Symbian OS v9.4, Series 60 rel. 5

We know Nokia tried to make all possible types of phone for all kinds of people but a Symbian^1 resistive touchscreen phone does not seem to fit the picture. At 270 euros (~Php10,300) before taxes, maybe it’s just price positioning or addressing the continuous demand for their old but still popular 5800XM.

This problem with resistive touch screens is simple – They break easier and should not be used on a hand held device (like a smart phone). Not to mention there are cool things like texting gloves now that easily solve previous problems with capacitive touchscreens.

The “problem” with resistive touchscreens vis a vis with capacitive touchscreens are anything a much more subjective matter than it is objective which means it’s quite that pointless in the very end.

In newer tech. screen displays as AMOLED of the sort resistive touchscreens are not a feasible option.

For a phone this type, having resistive or capacitive touchscreen is irrelevant.

i like the term “DUMB-DOWN”, a description fitting for Nokia smartphones. Windows Phone 7 just made Nokia’s newest OS even crappy than it already is. Good luck!

Well Symbian is dead (in a certain segment at least). If I read it correctly months ago, Nokia will stop putting symbian on their ‘smart’ phones by 2011(?), opting for Maemo instead. That’s why the release of the N8 and the upcoming E7 is quite controversial, them being Symbian (though Symbian^3). But since nokia dished out a whole lot of cash on Symbian, then made it open source, it may not die yet. To me symbian for all feature phones doesn’t sound so bad. What may die are the non ‘smart’ phones (or nokia’s s40s).

You could get a seemingly ‘dumb’, cheaply priced phone, having a very simple user interface that everyone even technophobes could appreciate, but inside it is a smart OS which is symbian (which allows for more customization in the future just in case these people decide they’re too smart for their phone hehe).

Just my two Filipino cents… hehe

nokia cant just do away with symbian because they invested a lot of money acquiring it. i think that was a bad move. i noticed a lot of first generation iPhones being used by the masses now. this is bad signal for phones running on symbian lalo na kung resistive screen pa.

I agree with @Mike, Nokia Android will be a hit! Symbian is so dead!

I think the problem is nokia invested heavily on symbian OS that having a hard time competing with iphone & android. As those 2 OS becoming popular, demands for symbian went down dramatically. Nokia should changed its strategy and instead follow the samsung style of dealing with multiple flatforms. Just like samsung nokia is also hardware manufacturer so, they should invest also in android, win phone 7, etc.

Maybe Nokia wants a plethora of models that every market/niche will be served, and hopefully buy a Nokia unit in the end.

pretty impressive move from nokia applying a resistive touch screen into a series 60 phone but not quite good since Symbian 1 OS has limited capabilities unless they made some upgrade to Version 9.4.

they really should realize that resistive touch screen is not working. phones with the same price range have capacitive touch.

Waitaminuet! They went from Symbian 3 to 1? Aw, not good–at the very least they should’ve priced it lower than 10k.
