LG’s new XNote S210 seems to be right in the fence between a regular laptop and a netbook. It comes with 12.1″ screen yet only weighs like a netbook at 1kg so we’ll put it under the ultraportable category.
The Gdium Netbook is a little different from all the other UMPCs out there. That’s because it’s not using any of the usual Intel Celeron/Atom or Via C7M processor but a relatively new one called Loongson 2F CPU.
Japan’s answer to the growing UMPC market is the Kohjinsha SC3 Series, a 7-inch feature-packed ultraportable that’s being entered into the US market.
A recent report from the Digitimes indicate first quarter laptop shipments for 2008 showed HP, Dell and Acer were the top 3 laptop manufacturers with 20.8%, 15.1% and 14.6% shares respectively. That represents just over 50% of total shipments or 15.67 Millions units.

Red Fox and AMD teamed up to develop their own Eee PC competitor and launched the WizBook this week with a much disappointing 400MHz AMD Geode processor. Hate to say the obvious but this is most certainly going to be a bust.
According to Gizmodo, Michael Dell is secretly lugging what could be an Asus Eee PC 900 or HP Mini-Notebook 2133 competitor. It looks like an 10″ Dell Inspiron mini-laptop to me.

As previously reported, ECS has unveiled details of their Simply Smart ECS G10IL and boy, does it have a whooping 7.2 Mbps HSDPA built-in with it.
Yet another player in the UMPC market has emerged. Definitely a hot item this season. The Astone UMPC is a 7 inch laptop that’s looking to grab a piece of the ultra-portable pie. See picture and specs after the jump.
Those waiting for the 9-inch Asus Eee PC will most probably be disappointed with the local retail price of around Php33,900. At that price, it already costs as much as a lot of regular laptops around.
Since I first bought the Compaq Presario V3000 over a year ago, I’ve been a fan of HP’s line of laptops. So, after selling off that old model, I went back and got an almost similar but lighter version — the Compaq Presario HP B1256TU.
I mentioned about this new find I have last week while traveling to Pakistan. My usual problem when on a trip is that I have a lot of bags in tow — one bag for the camera, another for the laptop and of course a big one for the clothes. Well, that’s what I had when I first went to Taiwan a few months back.
So, my quest for an almost all-in-one backpack was answered last week when I found this really nice Samsonite laptop bag. Pictures below:
It’s a layered backpack with the outer layer for the laptop and the main layer has room for clothes and my Rebel XT camera. There are a lot of compartments for documents too — 3 for the detachable laptop pouch and 2 more for the main bag, excluding the 2 side screen pockets.
The laptop layer case can be detached from the main backpack with its own carry-on handle. Two belt-clips and a zipper around the sides re-attach them back firmly. I reckon this could hold laptops with up to 15″ screen sizes (or prolly 17″ too!).
There’s not much padding on the inside but the back side has two sturdy strips of plastic to protect your shoulders against the laptop when holstered.
All in all, I think you can carry as much as 2 pairs of jeans, 3 t-shirts, a medium towel, your dSLR camera and lenses plus the laptop with a little more room to spare.
The damage? A bit pricey at Php4,200++. Hey, it’s a Samsonite.
For some time now, I’ve been pondering on getting a new laptop. I have 3 others wanting to buy my old one so I guess I’ll go ahead scout for a new one with at least a Centrino or a Core Duo, 1GB of RAM, DVD Writer, Card Reader and 12 to 13 inch of screen. Still want them small and can last 6 hours on battery. Hopefully, I could get all these under 70k.

Whenever somebody asks me which laptop to buy, I’d point them to the newer lines of MSI Megabook laptops. For the pricepoint, small sizes and lightweight, they seem to be a good deal. You also get two tones — one in black and another in white. Prices starts at Php35,999 to Php79,900.
