How’s your internet today?

I did a quick post over at PTB about Taiwan Earthquake shakes Philippine ISPs. It was in the news all afternoon.

I was uploading hundreds of photos in the gallery and what used to take me less than an hour stretched to as long as 4 hours. I couldn’t connect to YM on both PLDT DSL and Smart Wifi. I tried using Smart 3G/GPRS and got the same results.

Yeah! Bad phone lines and bad internet connection. Because the undersea cables in Taiwan was damaged, it was estimated that it would take something like 3 weeks to fix it.

    I’m using http://www.meebo.com for my YM needs…

AsiaNet was also hit pretty hard. They cater to both Globe & Pacific Internet. It was a NIGHTMARE yesterday! Had a hard time explaining to our clients how an earthquake so far away caused service interruptions throughout the day. Didn’t even dare mention that repairs could take as long as 3 weeks!!

last night smart bro and destiny were super slow to no connection. Today, Destiny has improved a bit but really slow. I am using Lauren’s smart bro connection. Oh well.

It’s much better now compared to yesterday. Am currently on Bayantel DSL but I still get stuck on some sites. But imagine taking half an hour to grab firefox!

operations in our office were disrupted.

could this also be the reason why i wasnt able to receive emails until now?

During the outage, my connection to Google was fine. Thanks to their diverse connectivity.

  16. Jerome G. says:

Yeah, Google (and other google-related services) were pretty much the only ones that doesn’t seem affected at all. I still get issues connecting to European-based sites like the BBC at this time.

  17. Jim says:

This made me think about maintaining a free-based mail. I couldn’t access my emails much more post on my blog. Though I was able to post one today, but after so much prayer that it won’t stall.

I guess the vulnerability of our connection here in the Region really needs some thinking as what was pointed out in the Inquirer.net article. We’re still having trouble here in Thailand and as the news say it might take weeks before they are able to restore the cables under the sea!

My globelines broadband connection just returned this afternoon. Up to now it’s as slow as dial-up. Hope everything will normalize tomorrow and that no one’s been hurt by the earthquake by any chance.

  19. vance says:

mine, is quite sluggish since yesterday (hmm isnt bayantel is using some asian corp for their internet)… now i can dl anything that fast…

  20. vance says:

it is quite sad that it will take 1-2 weeks for the lines to be fix… what a horrible start for new year. Bayantel is rerouting it to singapore. Wahhhhhh…

but i guess i must be thankful na safe parin tayo and only the net is affected by the quake..

  21. [...] Jepoy says the internet has gone crappy, Sir Abe has asked, “How’s your internet today?” bloggers respond varies from field reports to some interesting realizations plus the dreadful news that it may take as long as 3 weeks(!) for internet connections to go back to normal. Because of this, It’s a rugged life and I would have to slug it out for being back to dial-up speeds. Just look at the before and after the earthquake connection speed tests I took: [...]

  22. [...] I would have blogged the buggy Internet connection I was experiencing since December 26 after I heard from my father news about the Taiwan earthquake that damaged undersea communication lines, but it was all over the Philippine Blogosphere with news from Jhay, Yuga, et al. that I decided to stay quiet instead—its no use blogging the same entry all over again. Until now as I’m blogging this one, took me 10 mins. to open this site..wtf… and damn 3 weeks of restoration? huh… my internet cafe would be dead at that time .. :)

  24. pissed-off says:

this is taking too long for them to fix this crap.. good enough if they also lessen our payments…….. huh.. im like paying expensively for a connection slower than the dial-up!!
