Google Translate adds AI-powered context and tone suggestions

Listen to article

Google has revealed new AI-powered updates to Google Translate. It is aimed at helping users better understand tone and context when translating.

Powered by Gemini’s multilingual capabilities, the update provides alternative translations for idioms and casual expressions along with a guide on when and how to use them.

For example, users translating a phrase like “It’s raining cats and dogs” will now see multiple options with explanations to help choose the most appropriate expression.

A new “understand” feature offers deeper insight into the meaning behind translations. The “ask” feature allows users to request more tailored suggestions such as specific region phrasing or dialect variations.

The feature is now rolling out on the Google Translate app for Android and iOS in the U.S. and India. Web support is said to be coming soon.
