Project Soli advances, lets you control devices using gestures

Touch displays can soon be replaced by a more natural way of interaction — gestures. Project Soli from Google will make this come true and it’s already being tested on everyday devices like smartwatches and speakers.

The main technology involved here is radar. Using a tiny chip, it will be able to sense and track your finger’s movement. May it be a flick or snap, it will read it and send a command to the installed device. Here’s a quick showcase:

Project Soli is part of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) division which also develops Project Ara. So far, it’s been applied to multiple devices including car where it acts as an in-car remote control and giving a different definition to hands-free.
