MediaTek reportedly integrating Nvidia GPUs to its mobile chipsets by 2024

MediaTek is reportedly planning to integrate Nvidia GPUs into its next-generation mobile processors.

Mediatek X Nvidia Rumored Collab Fi

DigiTimes cited industry sources claiming that the Nvidia powered MediaTek chips will be featured in both smartphones and notebooks.

The report does not specify the exact specifications, but the two companies are said to be replacing the Arm-based graphics solution in an upcoming MediaTek Dimensity 9000 series chip with an Nvidia GPU, which could arrive as soon as 2024.

The collaboration is also said to involve building notebook chips for Windows on Arm (WoA) and Chromebooks, possibly in response to Qualcomm’s efforts in this area.

This move could prove to be a smart strategy, especially considering that Nvidia’s top competitor in the graphics industry, AMD, has been making significant strides with its new Ryzen Z1 APU—which powers the impressive Asus ROG Ally PC gaming handheld.

Additionally, Nvidia has significant experience in developing mobile GPUs, thanks to its Tegra chips that have been used in the Nintendo Switch and Tesla Model S onboard computers.

It’s worth noting that back in 2021, MediaTek and Nvidia demoed a laptop powered by a Kompanio 1200 chipset paired with a GeForce RTX 3060 GPU.

The system was capable of running AAA games like Wolfenstein: Youngblood with real-time ray tracing and DLSS enabled, and we also know that Nvidia has been working with Valve to bring many of its graphics technologies to Linux and Arm via Proton.

MediaTek’s partnership with Nvidia, a leader in the discrete GPU market, could enable the creation of a high-end chipset for flagship phones that can rival those from Qualcomm, Samsung, and Apple.

However, as with any rumors, we’ll take this with a grain of salt. If this collaboration ever comes to fruition, it could certainly result in the production of more powerful smartphones and notebooks with improved graphics capabilities, providing consumers with better options and more competitive prices.
